Like many Victorian travel books, this one is composed of letters written while traveling and was supposed to be of little to no interest to anyone who did not know the author. But the timing of this series of letters makes them important.

Written just prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War, the contain a record of travel in the Southern states by a northern American as well as fascinating details about Cuba of the 1850s. The write was a wealthy New York businessman and he visited Key West and Mammoth Cave as well.

While the tone is overall humorous, the writer nevertheless has a keen eye for the country and life he observes along his way.
