About the Author

Charles Fishman was born in Oceanside, New York in 1942 and grew up in the South Bronx and on Long Island. He is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of English and Humanities at Farmingdale State University, where he created the Visiting Writers Program in 1979 and the Distinguished Speakers Program in 2001. He has served as poetry consultant to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington, DC and is currently poetry editor of Prism: An Interdisciplinary Journal for Holocaust Educators. Fishman’s previous books include Country of Memory (Uccelli Press, 2004); Chopin’s Piano (2006) and Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust (2007), both from Time Being Books; Water under Water (2009) from Casa de Snapdragon LLC; and The Death Mazurka (Texas Tech University Press), a 1989 American Library Association “Outstanding Book of the Year” that was nominated for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. In 2005, Country of Memory was runner-up for the Paterson Poetry Award to Philip Levine’s Breath, and both Chopin’s Piano and Water under Water received the Paterson Award for Literary Excellence. He lives with his wife, Ellen, and tribes of plants, shrubs, and trees, in Bellport, Long Island, a short walk from the Great South Bay.
