Raspy voiced troubadour John Prine, best known for the heartfelt ballad "Angel from Montgomery" and irreverent social commentary including "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore," devotes himself to duets with an album of country classics -- and then some. "We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds" is sung here with country standard bearer Melba Montgomery, and Prine revels in some lesser known nuggets like the bizarre honky-tonk jukebox take on wife swapping, "Let's Invite Them Over," which he performs with Iris DeMent. Country great Connie Smith guests on two songs, and there's a pair of unexpected duets with Irish songstress Dolores Keane as well. Prine's conversational style fits best with Patty Loveless's high lonesome sound on "Back Street Affair," Emmylou Harris's cracked crystalline phrasing on "I Know One," and Lucinda Williams' delta dialogue on "Wedding Bells." The delicate duet with his wife, Fiona, on "When a Tear Becomes a Rose" shows that Prine can handle the softer side of things, too. But lest things get too sentimental, he closes with a song for (and with) the guys, "John I Sent Your Saddle Home." Ironic, funny, and sentimental -- would you expect anything less from John Prine?

It is so hard to imagine that I am actually the first person to take the time to write a review on this absolutely excellent CD! Why??? The songs on this disc are all wonderful, so much so that it is hard to narrow it down and comment on just one of the tunes. John Prine singing with such awesome talented women-Icons of the music world...EmmyLou, Lucinda, Iris, Trisha, etc...I truly wonder why more people don't seem to be more familiar with this most talented man/singer/songwriter/entertainer/survivor. He has lived, he has loved, he has hurt, he has felt, all shows through his music. I am looking forward to seeing John for the fourth time on 4/2/04 in Reading, Pa. I have seen him 3 times-all of those shows in Philadelphia, and I always left his shows with a big smile on my face, and great satisfaction about my time spent at his show! Now, he is soon coming to the Sovereign Performing Arts Center in Reading, Pa- much closer to my home town! When I got the notification from Oh Boy Records that he would be performing so close to home, I was totally thrilled! John's lyrics and uplifting music have always had the most positive effect on me, and on anyone who is fortunate enough to experience his great talent, so much that I am sure that all who listen to him or see him will leave his show with a huge smile on their face, and a happy heart-satisfaction guaranteed. This CD, and all of his shows are worth so much more than monetary value-he speaks and feels of real life---you have my word!!!!

Love every song on this CD. My brother owned it, and after staying with him and listening to this CD - I was totally hooked and had to get my own copy! I highly recommend it- the songs never get old.
