A compelling novel of a man brought to reckon with his buried past. In St. Adrienne, a small black community in Louisiana, Reverend Phillip Martin—a respected minister and civil rights leader—comes face to face with the sins of his youth in the person of Robert X, a young, unkempt stranger who arrives in town for a mysterious "meeting" with the Reverend.  In the confrontation between the two, the young man's secret burden explodes into the open, and Phillip Martin begins a long-neglected journey into his youth to discover how destructive his former life was, for himself and for those around him.

Image a small quiet town and a stranger come and walk around all day and night. He walks around in the cold the rain and the snow. He goes and sits on the church steps. His name is Robert X and he has come to town to find his father. His father is Phillip Martin a well know civil right leader who is looked up to. Why has Robert came to town what are his attentions? Pick up the book and find out you will not be disappointed.

It has a profound message to the fathers of today and they should really read this book! Share it with others! Fathers should embrace the opportunities they get and take up the reigns of responsibilities. GAINES HAS WRITTEN A BOOK THAT HAS TOUCHED MANY LIVES!!!

This book was the best book I've read in a long time. This book had a great message and it was easy to read and follow I read this book in three days. It is about a man named Robert X that is wanting to have a meeting with this man for a great reason. The man in question is Reverend Martin the small town leader. When Robert X arrives it changes the lives of the whole town.

In My Father's House tells about a young man who is new in the parish of St. Adrienne. Nobody has ever seen the man before, except for the pastor. The young man explains to those who approach him that he has come for a meeting. After a party at the reverend's house the reverend had seen the boy, but didn't know what his motives were to arrive in his home after some private investigation of his own the reverend finds out that the meeting the young man had was a confrontation with him. I give this book five stars because the suspence is extravagant.

It show people that what you do to other will come back to you but when you lease think of it and always remember that your past will come up no matter what and you can run from your past.

This novel was well written, but the ending should have been more profound. This novel portrays life and reality, and how much of an impact a father can have on his son's life. The protagonist, Rev. Phillip Martin, is divided between two worlds, one which include his twisted past filled with lust, alcoholism, and neglected children, and the other filled with accomplishment.
