Glacier National Park was a place for adolescent Melody Vega to forget her problems. She had felt peace and serenity there. But, the car crash that one night, when Mom died, had changed everything. Everything in the park reminded Mel of Mom. She felt like she would never be happy again, as she believes it was her fault Mom died. One night, Mel happens to come across a grizzly bear. Something seemed to be wrong with it. It was skinnier then most grizzlies and it was acting strange. Afterwards, her and her family meet a wildlife scientist, who studies grizzlies and together they try to solve the mystery. As they try to discover the causes, Mel is included in one of the most catastrophic nights in America’s national parks. This one night will change ideas about how bears and humans can live with each other in the boondocks. I really like how Lauren Tarshis combines this real-life event with fiction so flawlessly. I have read other historical fiction works by others, but I seem to like Lauren’s ideas, more. This book is interesting and exiting. There is not one place that is not worthy of note. I think that this book will be enjoyable and attention-grabbing for ages 11 and up. I give this book five stars. Reviewed by Lila H., 12, Central Pennsylvania Mensa
