The centerpiece of Sinéad O'Connor's second album is the hit single "Nothing Compares 2 U," a riveting remake of a neglected Prince tune and a fine showcase for the singer's emotional and vocal authority. Still, the original material on the rest of the album is every bit its match, with mesmerizing vocals, emotional candor, and simple but striking arrangements. O'Connor's talent for generating controversy has often obscured her real gifts as a singular record maker, but on this fine album she tackles difficult subjects with unflinching honesty: motherhood and family problems, the music biz and the price of fame, racism, and the Irish Troubles. A versatile composer, O'Connor tempers harsh lyric statements with musical dexterity, combining elements of traditional Irish folk with hip-hop, R&B, and dub reggae grooves. Songs like "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance" are explosive and cathartic, while "Three Babies" and "Feel So Different" are lush and soothing, much like the grown-up lullabies on her more recent release, Gospel Oak.
