Horse of a Different Color

Horse of a Different Color

by Big & Rich

Like many professional country musicians, the duo of Big & Rich -- Big being Kenny Alphin, while Rich is John Rich, a former singer for Lonestar -- are based in Nashville, but that doesn't mean they follow all the conventions of Music City. In fact, they throw conventions out the window on their 2004 debut album, Horse of a Different Color. They can certainly craft a kicking country song, as the backwoods ballad "Deadwood Mountain" proves, but they don't settle for that, preferring to spike predictable song structures with considerable doses of goofy humor or, better still, to fly beyond genre and concoct gonzo amalgams of country, arena rock, and rap. All of this makes Big & Rich hard to peg, particularly because they come across as a big-boned, country variation of Tenacious D or Ween -- talented musical pranksters who treat everything as a lark, but have the musical skills to back up their boasts. Like the D, they even have a theme song in "Rollin' (The Ballad of Big & Rich)" -- which bizarrely enough sounds a bit like Tenacious D, which isn't nearly as bizarre as how the melody of "Wild West Show" recalls Nirvana's "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" -- and they have no compunctions about being flat-out silly, which is good, since that silliness brought them a big novelty hit in "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," a song designed for drunken shout-alongs in sports bars. Much of Horse of a Different Color plays to that audience, but the surprise is that the rowdiness is tongue-in-cheek and that Big & Rich are musically clever, filling the record with big hooks and unbridled weirdness. Not that all of this is successful -- it can sound too goofy at points -- but it's wilder and stranger than most contemporary country albums of 2004, and a whole lot more fun, to boot.

THE BEST CD I'VE SPENT MONEY ON IN A LONG LONG TIME. Everyone should own a copy of this cd. The songs are a wide variety from serious to funny and I think that's what makes the cd AWESOME.

When I first heard "Wild West Show" it was so different that I didn't know if I liked it or not. It kept growing on me because it is unlike anything else on country radio. Then when I heard this CD I couldn't believe that every song on it was fantastic. I am definitely hooked and a huge fan of Big & Rich.

Big and Rich are the best! Their songs are songs that practically anybody can relate to. It's amazing how they can put just enough humor into their funny songs, and then right just enough sadness into their softer, sad songs, without making them terrible. Big and Rich are the BEST!

Deinfitely not Big Kenny and John Rich!! A Horse Of A Different Color is a wonderful showcase for two talented men brought together by a twist of fate that music fans across the board should be thankful for! There's a bit of everything on this album. A ruckus barroom anthem can be found in the smash hit "Save A Horse(Ride A Cowboy)" while a mellower, yet very powerful, sound lends it's voice to "Holy Water" an anthem in it's own right for those brought down by domestic abuse. Of course the biggest anthem of them all is "Rollin(The Ballad Of Big and Rich)" a surefire kick in the pants if there ever was one! Big and Rich have a unique style that allows no room for apologies. It's definitely a refreshing turn away from the cookie cutter sound Nashville seems to be producing these days. Expect this duo to go far and make sure to take a listen, I promise you won't be disappointed! I sure wasn't!

It's all well and good to read about the lyrical genius of an artist or their fantastic song crafting skills. Several professional and amatuer reviewers have extolled the virtues of Big and Rich from these points of view. But what most people want to know is this: Can I sing along? That question encompasses many ideas. Will I feel the music? Will I want to join the party? The answer is a resounding yes! You can sing along to this and you will want to. You will feel the ballads in your soul. When the tempo picks up, you will definitely want to join the party. Check it out, and you won't be disappointed.

It's about time country music got wild! Big and Rich sing about life while giving it an interesting comedic twist that is really taking the country by storm. They'll definitely get teens into country music!

I heard their first song released, liked it then I bought the CD. LOVE THEM! Even if all you have heard is the chatter about these boys or one song buy the album, guarenteed winner. The catagory may be country but it crosses so many boundaries! It rocks (and the record man said they'd never get it on hte radio! Ha!)

I bought "Horse of a Different Color" and after listening to it one time, I knew this was the best investment I have made in a Music CD in a long time. What I hate about buying a new cd is that there is usually one or two decent songs on the cd and youve wasted money by buying the whole CD. Not with this CD. I like to think of them as a combination of Kid Rock and Montogmery Gentry. The harmonies are awesome and some of thelyrics.. well, they are just plain funny! This is going to be one of my Long time favorites.

This cd is incredible. They are an amazing duo that is FUN. It's all about fun, loving everyone and being different. Different is good....they don't follow the Nashville establishment and I am so glad to see a duo like them comme along.

I first heard of Big and Rich when Save A Horse Ride a Cowboy came out and I instantaneously fell in love with their music. Horse of A Different Color is a great variety of Big Kenny's Rock and roll style and John Rich's country style, which blend together to make quite a unique sound. My favourites are Rollin", which features a 6'5 black rappin' cowboy called Cowboy Troy, and Kick my A** is funny, and the Love Train is a song about Loving Everybody. The more serious Saved and Deadwood Mountain, and Holy Water are very deep, personal songs that really bring out Big and Rich's serious side as opposed to their jumpy, dance tune Save a Horse. Go out and buy this album. You will not be disappointed!!!

The CD is absolutely amazing. These guys are out of this world. They are so dynamic and this CD shows their many faces. I love the mix of low key serious songs that talk about faith and the hard times in life, and the loud crazy fun stuff that is wild and unlike anything you'll ever hear from anyone else. After hearing this CD, it's easy to see why these guys are gaing such a hugh following so quickly. For more information about the guys, or to listen to some of their amazing music, check out thier website! You won't regret buying this CD, it brings a whole new twist to any country music you've ever heard before.

Every song on this CD is wonderful and showcases Big and Rich's unique style. In trying to describe them to friends it is always, "They're sort of country rock... but they're really fun and hilarious." In short, they're like nothing I've ever heard before, but they are awesome, and I recommend them to everyone.
