Overview

Prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing. Obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes are the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It is the leading cause of death for both men and women, which is one in every four adult deaths in the United States. The prevalence of heart disease is especially high among African Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Hispanics, and Caucasians.
The objective was to provide a nutrition education intervention to parishioners of a large church in Baltimore City, to improve their ability to utilize recommended portion size and make healthier food selection to enhance awareness for behavior change, utilizing a PowerPoint presentation and handout presented by the researcher.
The method and procedure of this study utilized a quasi-experimental, pre-/post-test design, with a convenience population of parishioners. Their ages ranged from thirty years of age to senior citizens and socioeconomic level ranged from low-income to middle class.

About the Author

Jerry Tucker, a Community Dietitian at Moveable Feast, grew up in a small town in Illinois, and later moving to Chicago to complete cooking school to become a Chef.
He moved to Baltimore in 1997, where he utilized most of my culinary skills at places like: J Paul’s Restaurant, Chef’s Expression, Spirit Cruises (Washington, DC), Keswick Multi-care Center, and other personal cooking contracts.
He received his Associates Degree from Baltimore City Community College in Dietetics. Then, became a supervisor for Food and Nutrition Department at Sheppard Pratt Hospital. However, he felt like the need to continue his education and use it to do more within the community. Therefore, he moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and received his Undergraduate Degree in Human Ecology, graduating Cum Laude. Thereafter, he continues to journey on that road of education to complete the Master's program at Immaculata University in Philadelphia, Pa majoring in Nutrition Education.
During his matriculation at these educational facilities, he received many accolades: Membership with Golden Key Honors Society, Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, Deans List, Most Outstanding Student, and the Who's Who List among Colleges and Universities, and he sat on the board of the Grades Appeal Committee.
He states, “It is with great pleasure that I serve my community using my knowledge and talent as a Registered Dietitian.”
