Overview

During the 1970s English/Celtic folk revival, Steeleye Span played Pepsi to Fairport Convention's Coke. But while Fairport was essentially a rock band playing trad tunes, Steeleye was and still remains a trad group flirting with the bracing energy of rock. Both groups were sparked to life by the genius of bassist/arranger/provocateur Ashley Hutchings. His heretical notion that trad and rock were natural bedmates was beautifully realized on this first Steeleye outing. "HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT," recorded in 1971, captures the original Anglo-Irish Steeleye lineup in all its regal, youthful splendor. From the opening four-part harmonies of "A Calling-On Song" through the final banjo plink of "One Night as I Lay on My Bed," this album sparkles with the sterling vocal interplay of thrushes Gay Woods (who shortly after "HARK" flew off with husband Terry to form her own bands and did not return to Steeleye until 1996) and Maddy Prior, forever the reigning queen of the Steeleye legacy. Classics like "The Blacksmith," and "Dark-Eyed Sailor" have now been covered by countless groups. None have ever surpassed the sweet ripple of Steeleye Span's versions.
