About the Author

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (October 16, 1854 – November 30, 1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and short story writer. Known for his barbed wit, he was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. As the result of a famous trial, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years of hard labour after being convicted of the offence of "gross indecency". The scholar H. Montgomery Hyde suggests this term implies homosexual acts not amounting to buggery in British legislation of the time. Source: Wikipedia

I had this book as a child. My mother gave it away and I have been searching for it ever since but didn't know the title or author. Thanks to the internet, I finally found it and am thrilled to share this beautiful story of selfless giving form the heart with my children.

THE HAPPY PRINCE It is a story of a swallow and a prince, who was once happy but now is not. The swallow meets the prince on while she is on her way to Egypt. She takes shelter under the statue of the happy prince to spend her night. But soon she finds out that the happy prince is really not happy and then helps him out in helping the poor and old. The story ends with an important message of love, selflessness and charity. I came across this beautiful story while I was going through my cousin’s English books. It is indeed the most beautiful story that I have ever read. Well a short story written by Oscar Wilde set in late 19th century; Wilde brings out the hypocrisy which unfortunately exists even today. Initially written for kids, Happy Prince can be read by a person of any age.

Probably my favourite piece of children's literature. Lovely stories beautifully told, though very sad (some perhaps too sad for little children). Also a pretty edition with some gorgeous illustrations.
