A backstage pass to the groundbreaking, hit musical Hamilton, winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, including the award-winning libretto, behind-the-scenes photos and interviews, and exclusive footnotes from composer-lyricist-star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country's origins for a diverse new generation.

HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it. Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages--"since before this was even a show," according to Miranda--traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. In addition, Miranda has written more than 200 funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here.

Their account features photos by the renowned Frank Ockenfels and veteran Broadway photographer, Joan Marcus; exclusive looks at notebooks and emails; interviews with Questlove, Stephen Sondheim, leading political commentators, and more than 50 people involved with the production; and multiple appearances by President Obama himself. The book does more than tell the surprising story of how a Broadway musical became a national phenomenon: It demonstrates that America has always been renewed by the brash upstarts and brilliant outsiders, the men and women who don't throw away their shot.

I haven't had the privilege of seeing the musical Hamilton yet, but I feel that between this book and the soundtrack I can almost picture it. Kudos to all who helped put the show together. This story depicted the grueling work and creative genius behind Hamilton, and it's fascinating.

What an absolutely marvelous book, but what a completely terrible reading experience! Trying to read this on a Samsung Nook, and every page turn takes about 10 seconds. To read each page -- the characters of which are blurry even in the print edition -- requires zooming in. But zooming locks up the Nook for another 10 seconds or so (unless it totally stops working which happened twice). Nice pictures -- unless you zoo in (even a little bit) where they become grainy and pixelated. Great book, but a disappointing read on the Nook.

A good look behind the scenes. So interesting to hear the stories that created this masterpiece. The best part is the annotated script w/ Lin Miranda's thoughts. Glimpse into genius. Best part.

One of the most interesting books that I have read! Writing style, historical period and characters, all "rapped up " with interesting tidbits about those involved with it's creation!

Incredible! This should be required reading for young adults in school. Paired with the original cast recording history of our nation's birth and the founding fathers comes alive!

This is a behind the scenes look at everything involved with the making of Hamilton. It tells how it came to be, how changes were made, who was associated with each part and all the other background information. It explains the importance of this production and the parallels between it and other historical events. I found it interesting, and it made me want to see the performance for myself.

A fantastic behind the scenes look As someone who will likely never be able to see the Broadway production, this was a fantastic piece to accompany my endless listening of the cast album. It delves into the cast and also the actual production of the show from audio to choreography. Interspersed are beautiful spreads of song lyrics with the actual scenes from the show behind them. These pages are where you get insight from Lin-Manuel Miranda with annotations on specific lines and fun backstories. While waiting for the tour to come to Boston in 2017-2018, I will be continuing to listen to the cast album as well as looking back at this book. It's a great coffee table read for guests as well. Highly recommended for fans of the show!

Magical and moving and unexpectedly hilarious, this was actually my feel-good read of the week. I'm one of those people who tends to fall hard and fast into their current obsession, and the "Hamiltome" more than satisfied my desire to know EVERYTHING about the musical--from how it was cast and staged, to what sorts of musical influences and personal touches were used. Bonus: it choked me up almost as often as the actual musical does, which has to count for something. I've already added this book to my to-buy pile, and I'd highly recommend it if you're as enamored with Hamilton as I am.

I bought the digital download of the musical, this book and now my son and daughter-in-law have given my wife and I tickets to the show in Chicago for our 50th anniversary. The music and story are thrilling and the book amplifies the musical with great photos, lyrics, behind the screens stories and notes from Lin-Manuel Miranda. It completes and compliments the entire package. A must have if you're a fan. You'll feel like you're "in the room where it happens".
