I was really excited when I found this book, I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and since I found it on sale I couldn't resist and bought it. I thought it was just going to be a book on some of the basic beasts that you come across in the actual books rather than the histories, but I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up and began looking through it. The book not only includes your creatures from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, but also from his histories and short stories, things that I had never even heard of or hadn't realized they had a proper name. It also doesn't just cover animals and creatures, but goes into summaries on different races, geographical regions, and even plants, such as Forodwaith and athelas. While the term "bestiary" is a little misleading, the book is just plain awesome. It even includes artwork throughout.

Day does an excellent job of explicating some of the intricacies of Tolkien's world, particularly the convoluted mythology of The Silmarillion. I'm not a big fan of the artwork in this book, though, which makes the whole thing only halfway successful for me.
