Good to Go

Good to Go

by Benny Goodman

4 New & Used Starting at $2.99

In the days before he was the King of Swing, Benny Goodman had a struggling band that played hot jazz like a small combo; they were too wild and loud for the ballrooms that catered to the Guy Lombardo crowd. Money was tight so when a chance to record and make a pile of dough doing transcription work arose, Goodman and his band rose to the challenge and blasted out these 25 gems (along with 25 others) in a single session, all one-take wonders. For this, the members in the band were paid the musician union's stipulated fee of a dollar per side, a true chunk of change by Depression-era standards. Although pivotal driving force Gene Krupa is here in the drum chair, we're still a few years away from the presence of Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, or Jess Stacey. All the more amazing, then, are these performances with the band virtually running through what was their entire book at the time, playing with an on-the-edge-of-their-chairs exuberance that comes with one-take, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants recordings like this. There may be a few clams on a track here and there, but this is some of the true beginnings of the swing movement, a movement that changed the course of popular music forever.
