The people of Earth have largely forgotten the terror created years earlier by the evil space alien Smots. John and Regal Warpspeed, Earth’s valiant heroes of the Smot War, inspire young Goldilocks, James, and Baby Bear to form the Warpspeed Fan Club with the goal of educating the people of Earth about the still-present danger of Smot attacks. Using American Bear Language (ABL) to talk among themselves, the unlikely trio discovers that animals and people can work together to do great things. Together, the Warpspeed Fan Club procures a disabled super weapon, the deadly laser gun, which they display at the local library as a reminder of Smot danger. But the Smots find out about the laser gun and plan to steal it to use as a model to make more weapons and reinvade Earth. Will the Warpspeed Fan Club be able to prevent the evil Smots from invading Earth for the second time?

About the Author

Over the years, Jim Daughton has repeated the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story again and again to his grandson, James. As James grew from a toddler to a boy interested in space adventures, the story gradually changed to keep his interest, and the story took the current form as a result. Jim is a retired engineer and entrepreneur and is now starting a career as a writer. He is the author of a memoir entitled A Rustic’s Journey to the Twenty-First Century (2009) and a children’s picture book entitled A Conversation with a Butterfly (Spring 2013). He is currently writing Travels with Jim and Della, a book on his world travels.

We read this book within our First grade classroom (group of higher achievers).  Given 18 students, the ratings ranged from 1 to 5 with an average of 3.  Students classified the type of book as a funny adventure mixed with  Science Fiction.  The overall plot is about three friends (Goldilocks, James, and Baby Bear (BB)) that learn about  the history of the SMOT attack and how Bears and Humans can communicate using ABL (American Bear  Language).  The friends set up a club that meets to learn more about the history of the SMOT attack and they bring in a Laser gun that they display in the Library showcase as to remind people of the past.  A SMOT Alien also wants this Laser gun.  At the end of the story the Alien SMOT show up and a battle occurs.  Students stated that the most interesting things about this book is the ABL and how Bears and people communicate.  They also could relate to the story as it takes place in Minnesota (where we are from).  Overall likes/dislikes statements included:  silly, about friendships, different than most books I read, tends to be more for boys than girls, thought the book would be more about Aliens but seemed to be more about friendship, story was starting to get a little slow and just when I started questioning "What happened to the Aliens" the SMOT appeared at the library, and Baby Bears songs to remember things was neat.  This group of students would recommend this book to friends. As a teacher there is one word  in the beginning that should be changed to Darn versus Damn.  Glad I caught  this and used a different word.  This word is offensive to some and not something for primary students.
