Britian's Amanda Ghost could be lumped with the Fionas and Alanises as another soul-searching queen of psychodrama, except, as a product of London's fertile club scene, she has more interest in beats and programming. On her confident debut, Ghost Stories, she exorcises the demons of her turbulent relationship with her domineering father in compact, densely packed songs. In "A Child Believes," she sings, "I only wanted the simple things, like being told you are loved," before wondering "when will I have the guts to leave." She's accusatory in "Blind Man" and "The Wrong Man" and seeks reconciliation in "Silver Lining." Ultimately, though, the lyrics are less revealing than the varied timbres of Ghost's voice and the layers of sounds. Her alto can be husky and seductive ("Glory Girl"), distorted and threatening ("Empty"), or clear and vulnerable ("A Child Believes"). On the propulsive club single "Filthy Mind," Ghost sneers and snarls over a pounding techno rhythm, while on the anthemic ballad "Idol," she works her way up to a soaring chorus. "I have this thought in my head, and it's about being noticed," she sings in Portishead-like "Empty." Ghost Stories is sure to make people notice this Ghost.

I bought this CD based solely on a few reviews I had read. It sounded like something I was interested in. Little did I know just how taken I would be with this CD. Each song is instantly likeable and they grow more appealing with each listen. The clubby ''Filty'' mind to the soaring, string inflected ''Numb'', this is one CD worth it's sticker price. Buy it and be blown away.
Filthy Mind was on a Movie Soundtrack CD I bought and then I found "Ghost Stories" (still sealed) in a pile of unwanted CD's at a flea market. They didn't know what they were missing. Every song brings out this singer's many talents. Blind Man is one of my favorites.
