About the Author

Hasselbeck was formerly known to television audiences as a participant on the wildly popular second edition of Survivor: The Australian Outback. What a load of rubbish! After reading the book and watching Ms. Hasselbeck heavily promote the book on various television shows, I find myself asking: does Ms. Hasselbeck even have Celiac or is Celiac a disguise for some eating disorder? If Celiac is largely hereditary, how come no one else in Ms. Hasselbeck's family (father, mother, grandparents, sibling) have the disease? Ms. Hasselbeck's claims that the "g-free diet" she has published is good for weightloss as well as persons suffering from Celiac (and kids with autism among others) is irresponsible and only a means for her to expand the market and sell more books. The fact is, most persons truly suffering from Celiac gain weight when they go on to a gluten-free diet because their body is finally able to absorb and retain nutrients. A few other observations and concerns I have: much of the book seems to be cut and paste of existing sources, etc. (why would you pay for this when you can collect some 90% of the same information on a google search)? And how come Dr. Green - who apparently co-authored the book - has not appeared with Ms. Hasselbeck in any of the interviews or other promotions she has done to launch the book? Bottom line: the book, the personal story told by Ms. Hasselbeck and the information provided is just not credible. At worst the book is very misleading and dangerous. As you can see at Barnes & Noble, there are many, many books on Celiac disease, living with Celiac, and gluten-free eating and recipes. Look for a book by a credible medical expert not attached to a celebrity whose claim to fame is appearing on a reality television show. Ms. Hasselbeck is only trying to line her pockets with more money. Doing so off the back of a very serious illness is really disturbing. UPDATE: WARNING ABOUT DANGERS OF E. I am newly diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. Ms. Hasselbeck's book, a very easy read, was the first I read in beginning my research into living gluten-free. I was encouraged by her optimistic and positive attitude, though about half way through the book her "cheerleader" tone started to wear on me. In further research in other sources, I have found that some of Ms. Hasselbeck's information, such as foods that she considers too dangerous to eat even though the rest of the gluten-free community has determined they are safe, to be a little overly restrictive. I would hate to think of someone who is struggling to adjust to living without gluten bearing the burden of additional unnecessary restrictions because of this book. Read this book if you like, but please do additional research before making hard and fast decisions as to your diet.

As a health counselor whose nutritional counseling practice is heavily focused on helping people with gluten allergies phase gluten out of their diet to regain their health, I wasn't expecting to learn much from this book. I'm well versed in gluten-free living from helping my clients and living gluten-free myself. But I was hoping it would shed more thorough light to the public on how gluten can wreak havoc on one's health - even if one isn't celiac. It's called a Gluten-Free Survivial Guide - not a book solely for Celiacs. And, most people would benefit from being low or gluten-free. Unfortunately, this book didn't accomplished that. If anything, I walked away feeling like someone reading this new to a celiac diagnosis or hoping to improve or even reverse their asthma, inflammation levels, cholesterol, skin problems, diabetes, IBS, acid reflux, exhaustion, anxiety attacks and depression (all which can be done by going gluten-free and changing over to a whole foods diet) would feel overwhelmed and afraid of eating forever. I understand Elisabeth has no nutritional background beyond her own experience, but she has access to some of the most progressive health professionals in the world. She could have brought in more research on the incredible benefits of a gluten-free diet and a clear cut process for removing gluten from the diet. Many people who have dieted all their life or are emotional eaters (which is the other majority in my practice) will at first, cling to this "deprivation" but in the end, binge on these gluten-foods. This is very dangerous territory and can send people who have a fragile relationship with food off the deep end. Professional help is needed during this transition if you don't want to go insane in the process. I wish Elisabeth would have at least stressed this in the book so that people who already feel like failures with food, wouldn't set themselves up for more heartache. I also found some of the information in this book to be inaccurate. For example, there are brands of brown rice syrup that are gluten-free. And one doesn't need to avoid all dairy substitutes. Certain almond milk brands are gluten-free and can be helpful in restoring your health as dairy is very hard to digest. Also, oats are naturally gluten-free and at one point in the book, she mentions they contain gluten. There are some helpful things but overall, wait for the paperback and try books like UltaMetabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman. Great research, info and recipes there. Ali Shapiro, CHC, AADP,

The book is very repetitive...same information explained over and over again. It was a boring read...and I am really interested in the topic being gluten sensitive myself...but the book did not give me any new information, and it was so repetitive.

Though not a big fan of Elisabeth Hasselbeck I do value her personal experience with celiac disease, so I thought The G Free Diet would be a good read and I wasn't disappointed. I was surprised at the number of people who suffer from celiac, also that you can be sensitive to gluten without actually having the disease. The effort that is needed to be successful with the lifestyle changes is remarkable but with information from books like Elisabeth's and the support of the numerous organizations that are available, along with a good nutrionist, these changes will become routine and certainly worth the effect to avoid the damage that is otherwise done to the small intestine. With a detailed appendix and index, I found the G Free Diet to be a fairly complete introduction to celiac. I would definitely give Elisabeth's book 5 stars.

Despite whatever your feelings for Elisabeth Hasselbeck might be, this book is an excellent resource for any newly diagnosed Celiac patient and their families. I was recently diagnosed with a severe gluten intollerance, and was daunted by the thought of eliminating all starchy products from my diet. While I knew that pasta, bread, pastries, etc would have to become a thing of the past, I had no idea the numerous other places which gluten hid in my diet! I was baffled as to why my symptoms were not drastically improving, but thanks to this book discovered that I was actually still consuming gluten, labelled under alternate names. As an otherwise healthy 25 year old, this transition has been tough. But this book has been a great resource for both me and my husband, as we work to better understand the disease, and how it will affect our lives. These changes are not impossible, but Elisabeth's casual advise on what to avoid and how to handle otherwise awkward situations, has really helped make the process easier. I would definitely recommend the book!

Ms. Hasselbeck knows what she's talking about!!!!!!!! Trust me! I was also self diagnosed. It was later confirmed. If you are sick and cannot figure out the cause PLEASE get tested and read this book. I gained weight with this disease NOT lost weight! If you are having a problem get tested and discuss the G-free diet with your doctor~!

My daughter has been extremely ill ever since her baby was born 1 1/2 years ago. Her stomach is always upset. After going through allergy tests, gall bladder surgery, a colonoscopy, endoscopy, 25 biopsies, and dealing with several doctors, she was at her wit's end. I heard about Elizabeth Hasselbeck's new book, The G-Free Diet, and decided to send it to her sight unseen. As soon as she read the first few pages, she called me and said she could totally relate to Elizabeth. She was able to try a few of her suggestions, record what she ate, track the items that seemed to make her sick, and modify her diet so she was able to function. Prior to reading this book, she couldn't go anywhere without living in fear that she wouldn't make it to the bathroom on time. This book has really helped her, so I'm very grateful that I heard about it. I appreciate the ease of ordering the book online so I could send it out of state and get it to her in a timely manner. Elisabeth Hassleback knows what she is talking about and it works. It is great for anyone with that disease or just wants to be on a G-free diet...It is a must for anyone who is trying to get Gluten free food....Plus anyone who is interested in this kind of diet....people who are researchers and anyone thats wants a good diet book!

Written in an easy-to-read style, this book no doubt will be a great help to many who have frequent stomach pains and other strange symptoms. It could be an inherited predisposition to certain foods, and trigger a condition known as Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. In addition, there's a link of gluten to autism. I've heard about the evils of gluten, but I've never investigated it. I was surprised to discover how pervasive it is in everyday food--even some vinegars! Included are recipes, along with tips on organizing a kitchen, shopping, parties, and restaurants. This will prove to be a handy reference tool.

This book has really helped me. I have been diagnosed with Celiac's disease very recently. It was a shock to me because I have never heard of this. My mother is gluten intolerant, but no one else in my family has this disease. I have had blood tests, and an endoscopy and both proved this is what I have. Mrs. Hasselbeck has given me excellent advice on how to deal with this lifestyle. Now my entire family will be living a gluten free life.

I started taking gluten out my diet as an experiment to see if my severe, unexplained back pain would improve. So far the result has been great. I have to say, this book was a wonderful source for information. It's easy to understand and full of great tips. The tone is also very non-judgmental, which is important for a health book. I recommend it to anyone who is getting ready to start their gluten free journey.

After reading this I am so excited to get started on creating a G-free life for myself. Thanks for your willingness to share your own experiences will your battles with intestinal pain and Celiac disease. The book is an easy read and you are learning so much without feeling as if you are reading a medical journal. Great job!

There was a lot of good information in this book that made me think about what to do in my home for my gluten-free grandchildren. Some of the stories seem as if they may be exaggerated but, "better safe than sorry". While I had been aware of the dangers of food ingested, I did not know about the dangers of contamination through the skin.

I think this is a great "jump start" guide for anyone who either HAS to be G-Free, or is choosing to. It is a daunting task, and this book helps you understand that is IS do-able and doesn't have to be ALL sacrifice.

I was extremely disappointed with this EBook, Mrs. Hasselbeck refers to later pages that were not included in my download and now I have to get the actual book to get all of the information. It is truly frustrating to think you are getting the whole book and to be cheated. Instead I would recommend the paper version as there is some good information and it is a good way to get jump started on a gluten-free diet.

I would give this book 10 stars! It is wonderful and is a life-saver for me.I have bad reactions to gluten and have been told by allergist and doctors but did not take it too seriously.After reading Elizabeth's book I got real serious about it.I had gall bladder surgery few years ago and didn't feel too much better afterwards..three weeks after I started the g-free diet I felt like a different person with a new lease on life.I have much more energy,my muscles are not as sore,I sleep much better,back problems are almost gone (my chiropractor is amazed!)But mostly I am not bloated anymore and can eat without getting so very uncomfortable or sick.I can eat at restaurants without getting painfully uncomfortable or even sick. Elizabeth said there will be one thing that will bring you back to this book and diet if you go off it.She was right.I was determined NOT to go thru life being bloated and feeling so uncomfortable so now I am on the diet for life.Not so bad after getting used to it.The education I got from reading her book tells me that I am prolonging my life in a healthy way and might have even saved it.Many restaurants have gluten free menu's.Just ask or check her book.Many stores have gluten free sections.It is worth every penny to me. I am so so grateful to Elizabeth for making this information available.Her books are always sold out in the Dallas area.I have given them as gifts and have loaned mine out many times.Family and friends are grateful for this helpful infomation. I thank Elizabeth almost every day for this easy read and very valuable information. dallasgirl

It is not an allergy! Gluten is toxic to a person with Celiac disease. I think that in order to make the book 'marketable' some of the pertinate facts were not carefully researched. There are good recipes included in the book.

Being a Celiac myself, I have read several books on this topic, but I have to say that I'm quite impressed with this one. I think more because Hasselback's title has such updated information and she focuses a lot on what you should do when you go out to eat. She takes a real-life approach to how a woman can handle being a Celiac, by offering advice in regards to how you discuss your dietary needs, or how you may choose not to discuss it. I also really appreciate Elisabeth's focus on "replacing, not eliminating." And what great focus on cross-contamination; I've realized this may very well be the problem that I've been having! Thanks to this title, I've discovered the root of a few problems that I've been having with my gluten-free diet!

The G-Free Diet covers social aspects - dining out at restaurants, with friends and family and travelling. Did you know that IPhone has a gluten free restaurant application? What if you have a child with this condition? Keeping a gluten free kitchen, reading labels and shopping.There are fantastic resource lists included. Definitions of all the ways and places gluten can be found and listed. Lists of 'safe' foods, online resources and information and other books for further reading.After reading this I have a new respect for someone living with this condition. And I think I might just investigate some of the other grains listed that are gluten free. Many people are choosing to eat this way for an energy boost, weight loss and feeling healthier.
