Overview
If you think fusion music just isn't the real deal without electric guitars, souped-up synths, and built-to-be-battered drums, this recording will change your mind. Exchanging power axes for acoustic instruments, this trio of guitar superstars hit the stage ready to draw blood from each other. Playing a game of "can you top this?," they trade dizzying, dazzling solos. Most of the tracks have an Iberian flavor, although the unison guitar passages and lightning-flash solos place everything firmly in the fusion camp. The McLaughlin/De Lucia duet "Frevo Rasgado" has its lyrical moments and the McLaughlin/Di Meola duet "Short Tales of the Black Forest" is goofy fun, but things get awful frenetic most of the time. Amazingly, this is one gunfight where everyone is left standing.
