Jill and Brian's story was not as rich as Meredith and Tanners but it was still very much worth reading. Loved how you got started on Peggy and Mac. I am really looking forward to reading that next. The one problem I had with this book was that it was a little too steamy at parts. When you have a writer with this much talent, you don't need to resort to steam to move a book along.

This is a sequal to "NORA ROBERTS LAND". It cost $4.99 and has 312 pages. Meredith, the heroine, in the first book is hardly mentioned in this book. I did not like Jill, nor Brian. Quite frankly, both are asses. Please excuse my langauge. It is nothing compared to the profanity in this book. F#@k and GD are in almost every paragraph. Inexcusable. The sex got down right nasty and there was too much of it. The editing was okay, but there were some left out words. Jill was a harrigan. She always had her panties in a bunch about something, then if someone got mad at her, it was oh, poor little Jill. Brian was a wuss. If the author did not want to be thought gay, she should have made him a more manly. But then she did write him this way. This book really got on my nerves. I admit, I skipped ahead. There is way too much drama, crisis after crisis, and just plain poor writting. The first book was better. I rated it a little higher. Chick lit for adults. This book is a disappointment. I wanted to see what was in store in Meredith, as the author promised a big reveal in her life, in this book. The event was non-existant. AD

***1/2 Ava Miles' French Roast offers a slightly different perk I was really looking forward to reading the second book in the Dare Valley series, French Roast, but will admit to not being as engaged in this story as in Nora Roberts Land.  French Roast is the story of Meredith’s sister Jill, the proprietor of Dare Valley’s go-to coffee hangout, and her high school crush and boyfriend Brian McConnell. Brian, a chef, returns to Dare after making it big in Manhattan. His reasons are a bit sketchy (and you’ll find out why), but soon he and Jill are trying to reconnect as friends and plan a restaurant together.  As a foodie romance lover, you’d think this would be my favorite book of the series, but it’s not. Frankly, I think it’s because Ava Miles did just too good a job about creating the character of Brian. He has all the negative qualities of chefs I’ve worked with - arrogance, self-interest, slipping morality - and some of his actions, well I find them hard to understand. In contrast, Jill’s over-the-top enthusiasm is sometimes wearing. By the conclusion of the book, both characters have evolved somewhat, but unlike Nora Roberts Land, I was able to put this book down several times.  That’s not to say you shouldn’t read it. You should. Once again, Ava Miles’ beautiful and addictive prose overcame my angsty feeling with her protagonists. And as I could tell I was investing myself in the series, this book served as an introduction to characters and understanding of Dare that I knew would be helpful for understanding future books. I’ll let you in on a secret. As the series has progressed, I’ve come to enjoy the characters of Jill and Brian as they mature. But this is very much a New Adult-themed romance, in contrast to the more evolved characters of Miles first book.

I like your books very much except this one got a little carried away with the sex was a little sick.

Enjoyed the first in this series, however, way too much drama in this one. The character Jill was over the top with her flying off the handle at small challenges the characters involved in her life gave her. Would not recommend.

Welcome back to Dare Valley, CO! Book two of the Dare Valley series, French Roast by talented author Ava Miles is a completely captivating Contemporary Romance starring two of the characters from book one, Nora Roberts Land. I fell in love with Jill Hale’s quirky and charming character in book 1 and was thrilled that French Roast was her turn to dive into the “love” pool. But will she sink or swim? After being best friends for years growing up, upon High School graduation, Brian McConnell shreds Jill’s heart by going off the culinary school in New York. That. Was. Not. Supposed.To. Happen. Jill was just getting up the nerve to let Brian know that she wanted more than friendship and he kept this huge news from her? Years pass and their relationship is now non-existent, Jill cannot get over what she took as betrayal, but today she is a successful coffee shop owner, independent, colorful and full of small town business savvy. She takes everything life tosses at her in stride, until Brian returns to Dare Valley, even more handsome and sigh-worthy than before. And there goes her heart into overdrive, again. Can they finally get together now? After all, hadn’t she secretly harbored thoughts of being Mrs. Brian McConnell for years? Between outside influences, inner turmoil and secrets not shared, these two are like over-caffeinated donkeys often pulling in the opposite direction from where they want to be. And of course, the entire town is all eyes and ears to the fodder for the gossip mills! Ava Miles has raised the entertainment bar, again! Both of these characters will steal your heart with their antics, attitudes and fears. Can small towns be fun? If it’s Dare Valley, definitely, as Ms. Miles decorates her pages with small town charm and citizens. I read to be entertained, and I was, completely with this light and airy romance peppered with pitfalls and setbacks! Who knew being the “fly-on-the-wall” could be so much fun? With her creative genius and sense of humor, Ms. Miles has penned a fast-paced, warm and endearing tale that had me smiling at the end and plotting MY preference for the next duo to “gamble” with the “badge” of love. (Yes, that was a hint to the author!) Do I recommend this series for lovers of romance? Oh, yes, absolutely! I need to thank the author for my review copy! Next time I need a few smiles, I'll be reading this again!

Only made it about halfway through. Jill is selfish, immature and too dramatic. Brian is an idiot and never stood up for himself when Jill was up his a** over this one thing she can't get over. Other reviews say there was too much sex and foul language... There was maybe 1 scene in the first half that was about 2 pages long, yet I quit halfway through... Definitely liked Peggy the most.

Good story line with exceptions of too much descriptive sex. Also brian was dense - kissing simca on the cheek was saying goodbye - not a liplock

I really enjoyed the book , but the explicit sex and foul language was uncalled for. After the discreptive sex began, my interest lessened, and the language did it for me. I don't think this is needed to make a book good. As good as her other books have been, won't be reading any more of her books. I am not a prude, just don't think that stuff is needed.

Characters are complex & come together nicely, although there are many bumps in the road. I enjoyed the book & will probably read the next one.

I felt that this story was very predictable from start to finish. The main female character, Jill, acted very immature, which made it hard to believe she was a successful business woman. I enjoyed the first book in this series much better.
