Overview

As one of the first children's albums to explore the post-'60s world, focusing on validating emotions and encouraging diversity, Free To Be...You and Me is at once charmingly dated and surprisingly relevant. The datedness is mainly in the music itself, which is bouncy, as-if-rock-was-never-invented pop, performed by '70s TV icon Thomas (Danny's daughter and star of the sitcom "That Girl") and a host of guest celebs. They include Alan Alda, Jack Cassidy (David's Dad on "The Partridge Family"), Harry Belafonte, Mel Brooks, Dick Cavett, Carol Channing, Billy DeWolfe, Rosey Grier, Shirley Jones, Robert Morse, the New Seekers, Diana Ross, Diana Sands, and Tommy Smothers. As for relevance, many of these songs' themes are just as vital as they were nearly 30 years ago. Thomas and friends look at gender stereotyping ("William's Doll," "Ladies First"), responsibility ("Housework," "Helping"), imaginary pals ("Dudley Pippin and His No-Friend"), and proudly assert, "It's All Right to Cry." Kids have rights, says Thomas, but "Parents Are People Too." And when all's said and done, who isn't "Glad to Have a Friend Like You"?
