I remember playing the original gold box computer game, which is better and the rewrite for NWN. So I had to read this book even if it was a drag. In the end I really liked it. What I found I liked the most was the pace, simplicity and immersion into the actual DND game setting. It is like the original Diablo game, simple and enjoyable.Don't expect a ton of drama or a tightly woven who done it. It is a hack and slash book which tells a story probably written for younger readers. It is probably most enjoyed by DND players of the pencil and paper game or the computer games.

Anyone who's played the 1988 PC game or the table top module will recognize many of the locations and monsters described in the book. The dramatization really works, though comes off as a little campy. A few parts felt a little rushed as well, but overall I feel this was an enjoyable wall down memory lane from another perspective and look forward to reading more of these novels.

James Ward does an amazing job of grabbing you from the beginning and keeping you totally intralled in the story line. This is based on the computer game of the same name, which is actually what got me into the Forgotten Realms in the first place. By far one of my favorite books and easily in the top 3 or 4 of all the novels in the Forgotten Realms. By far the best of the series.

Based on the goldbox game by TSR Pool of Radiance is based in the Moonsea area of Faerun in the FORGOTTEN REALMS setting. 1st book of the 3 part series a must read if you even think about reading the other two. Very good for those interested in the Moonsea area and the city of Phlan in general. It concerns three very unlikely companions named Shal Bal, Ren O' The Blade, and Tarl Desanea. The city of Phlan is in ruins from years of monster raids and most of the city is overrun with monsters. The city's council is striving to get the ruins of Old Phlan free from the one known as The Lord of The Ruins to make the city inhabitable again. Commissioned by the Honorable Eighth Councilman Cadorna Tarl, Ren, and Shal are caught in the fight to save Phlan against they're will and they cant escape. Not the best in the series but it sets the foundation for the other two books which are increasingly better.
