"I ain't gonna do it if it ain't real," Tom Petty sings on "No More," the quiet, acoustic reverie from his new, Rick Rubin-produced ECHO. Those words will certainly ring true for fans of '60s-style roots rock who find themselves lost in the techno-and hip-hop-dominated '90s. Petty's first album three years offers no innovations from the Byrdsian jangle and undeniable hooks of his last album, SHE'S THE ONE -- and why should it? Songs like the driving folk-rocker "Won't Last Long" and the hard-rocking "Free Girl Now" are just pushy enough to make Petty's ever-familiar Dylan impression seem somehow immediate, if not quite urgent. Meanwhile, the countrified "Lonesome Sundown" and the stately "Swingin'" improve on the most compellingly tender moments of Petty's career-topper, FULL MOON FEVER. An absolute must for fans, ECHO may even give heart to alt-rock kids who've spent the '90s subsuming their classic-rock roots. Keepin' it real rarely sounds this sweet.

I think this album is one of the greatest albums recorded in recent years! Room at the Top, Swingn', Rhino Skin, and Echo are my favorite songs on this album. Kind of a dark/sad album, but sometimes some of the best songs are written when people are going through hell in life.
