The result of a five-year airborne odyssey across five continents and 60 countries, Earth from Above is the most revealing and spectacular portrait of our world ever created. From a heart-shaped mangrove forest in New Caledonia to a flock of red ibises in Venezuela, from a caravan of camels in Mauritania to Mt. Everest and Mammoth Hot Springs, re nowned aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand presents nearly 200 striking color images that put our home planet in a whole new perspective. Produced under the sponsorship of UNESCO, the book is also a unique documentary record of the earth's fragile ecosystems at the dawn of the new millennium. Commentaries by noted specialists illuminate what we see-and explain exactly what we stand to lose as demographic pressures put more stress on the environment.

The photos in this are generally really nice - though there are some that are grainy or too low resolution for the high quality printing and large size. Generally, this is a cool coffee table book. I tried reading the essays etc, though, and they are fairly bland, generic, uninteresting, which has lowered my rating quite a lot from what it would be otherwise. The captions are downright boring. SO MUCH MORE could possibly be said, even given the small amount of space. Pretty much the only information given is the answer to "Where in the world *IS* that?" But nothing much beyond that.

Being a datebook of aerial photographs and remote sensing imagery with captions on facing pages. The pictures are frequently spectacular; the captions are meant to be thought-provoking but too often are merely head-scratchers. There is no obvious reason for the linking to dates. The binding is horrible; it fell apart almost immediately.

I purchased Earth From Above as a gift for someone who loves to travel. Before giving this book as a gift, I had a chance to look through some of the gorgeous pictures. The photographs were very impressive at first glance, and each picture also provided a detailed description. As a 2nd grade teacher, I would definitely use this book in my classroom to provide wonderful photographs from around the world to enhance learning. Overall, I was happy with this book and so was the gift recipient.

On the web, I spend more time with text and static images. For me, it's faster. For me, there's less committment of my resources, ie. time, to scan text and image. Then, if I'm interested, I pursue it further. Guess it's my simple-minded way to deal with the information glut. This large book with large images was purchased as a gift, for an elderly gentleman, who just lost his wife - my uncle after my aunt passed away. My uncle has always been a man of generous and broad interests. I hope the images and messages are something he can gather around with his children and grandchildren. I like to imagine him sitting at the table after dinner with some family, talking about the world and the lives of men. To me, sharing the experience of a static image lends itself more to intimate moments than watching moving pictures. I'm tech guy, but sometimes I think people are beginning to confuse the technology with the message and emotion. For my uncle, I hope the book is more a beginning than snippets of information access.

I read the other reviews before purchasing this book & they were right on the spot! I bought this book as a gift to my husband and he couldn't put it down for the first week. Now it sets on our coffee table and our guests love to thumb through it. It's definetly a conversation starter.

and this books shows it off as such! I flipped through it at a bookstore, thought about it all evening and went on line to purchase it the next morning. A visual stunner! Not something you'll only look at once, that's for sure!

The spectacularly beautiful photographs in this book are juxtaposed with sobering text describing the destructive impact of humans, particularly those in the industrialized world, on this magnificent and fragile planet. The effect is very profound.

My wife and I saw Artus-Bertrand's exhibit at Chicago's Grant Park on a hot summer day. We spent two hours grazing through what we considered to be the most tremendous photo exhibit we have ever seen. We were awed at the effort and the amount of time it took. The scope is like an encyclopaedia. Then we got the book. We made the mistake of leaving it on our coffee table during a dinner party. Well, it provided entertainment for six! Probably saved me $300 in wine! REALLY, this book is entertainment for the young who want to know about saving the world; it is entertainment for older folks who can see what we have done to change the world. Don't miss it. PS: It is an excellent gift.

I recently came across the ¿Earth from Above¿ exhibition in Montreal, Quebec. It was so enjoyable to me I had to purchase the newly updated book. The mixture of brilliant pictures and social conscience make this a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys photography or wants to see a unique perspective of our world.

During a trip to Chicago in early June I came across one of the 'Earth from Above,' outside exhibts. After seeing such great work, I had to have the book to be able to see the images again and again.

Like some of the other reviewers, I too saw this photography exhibit in a Paris garden in the fall of 2000. I liked the pictures so much that I bought the book in french at a Paris bookstore moments later, and I don't even speak french. This book makes a great gift for yourself or anyone.

I couldn't put this book down in 2 visits to my local B&N. The pictures are absolutely stunning both from an artistic view and an anthropological/sociological perspective. I finally bought it for my sister and her family as a coffee table book. Hopefully, the amazing pictures will pique the interest of my nephews and niece and encourage them to travel when they get older. What a splendid planet that we call home!

Like others, we were delighted to discover the outdoor exhibit of Arthus-Bertrand's photographs when they were exhibited at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris this fall. The high quality of the photographs combined with the photojournalist's eye for context and scale makes this survey of our earth's surface breathtakingly beautiful and immensely informative on many levels. While seeing the exhibit was memorable, the publisher has given us a book that is a bargain at $65. The high quality glossy paper, typography, binding, and fold-out maps are design choices that further enrich the images. It is an encyclopedic homage to the planet. Thank you to the photographer and everyone involved in the book.

While on a recent vacation in Paris, we happened upon the marvelous outdoor exhibit in the Luxembourg Gardens showing some of the unbelievable photos contained in Bertrand's book. These images have continued to be among the most recurrent memories of our trip. The quality and subject matter of these photographs are unique and breathtaking. This is a coffee table edition that will be admired and reread by both young and old.
