As sideman, bandleader, and visionary, septuagenarian Earl Scruggs has cut a swath through country music history wide enough to have crossed property lines and infringed on rock music's turf, too. Such is the evidence on Earl Scruggs and Friends, what with the likes of Elton John (on a reimagining of "Country Comfort"), Melissa Etheridge, and Sting sitting in. But the day really belongs to Scruggs, whose banjo solos on his first new recording in 17 years remain a wonder of inventiveness and economy, and to the country-rooted artists joining him here. Dwight Yoakam reduces the competition to rubble with the fevered "Borrowed Love," a cautionary tale about the wages of wanton desire written on the spot by Yoakam, Scruggs, and his son, project producer Randy Scruggs. "True Love Never Dies" is an occasion for gritty trade-off vocals by Gary Scruggs and Travis Tritt, and hot picking by Scruggs père et fils. John Fogerty sparks a bluegrass workout on the traditional "Blue Ridge Mountain Blues" with his bold, twangy vocal setting the stage for Scruggs, fiddler Glen Duncan, and Dobro maestro Jerry Douglas to tear it up with their respective solos. Vince Gill, with Rosanne Cash adding silky, seductive vocal harmony, offers a remarkably tenderhearted "I Found Love." Bookending rough-hewn vocals by Don Henley, Johnny Cash adds gravitas to "Passin' Thru" (co-written with Randy Scruggs) by way of stentorian spoken verses that smack of philosophical insights from a backwoods Lao-Tzu. And for good measure there's a nearly five-minute taste of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," courtesy of an all-star instrumental lineup whose members include Leon Russell, Albert Lee (with a fabulous solo), Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, and Steve Martin, in addition to the Scruggs family and others.
