I have read all of the No 1 ladies detective agency series, so I was looking forward to the boxed set coming out as I do not have HBO It did not disappoint. the characters are very true to the book. I didn't even mind them adding the hair dresser. Enjoyed the extra features and interviews with Alexander McCall Smith. I lived in South Africa for about a year in the late '70s Just a very good well done series

While my husband and I were living in the Limpopo Province of South Africa as Peace Corps Volunteers, family was sending us the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books to read since they were set just across the border from our village. I read only one book before I deemed them boring and too slow paced, but my husband trudged through maybe 3 of them. Arriving back in the States in 2009, we stumbled across this HBO series and LOVED it! I can honestly say that for once in my life, I enjoyed the movies more than the books. It was completely true to the culture (other than the addition of trying to address some modern issues that cause shame in Southern Africa such as HIV and Gay people. This would not be seen so openly in a small town in Southern Africa). We were captivated by the story line and the characters did a fantastic job of mimicking how women would act in Botswana. I have since bought several sets of this series to send to family and even friends who live in the villages of South Africa.

For those who have read and enjoyed the books by Alexander McCall Smith, or for those who are new to the world of Ma Ramotswe and the Botswana she loves, this series from HBO and the BBC will be a delight. Filmed in Botswana, with many local actors, I loved every episode of the series when it was shown on HBO and I knew I would have to own a copy of the DVD. My only criticism is that the series is too short, with a two hour pilot, and then six hour long episodes. (Many fans are anxiously hoping for HBO to show a second season.) Jill Scott is a revelation as Ma Ramotswe, and the supporting cast is equally good. The stories are not told in exactly the order of the books, and a new character has been added, but the feel of the books has been captured remarkably well, and the filming is gorgeous. This is the best portrayal of ordinary life in southern Africa that I have ever seen. And the music is also excellent! If you weren't lucky enough to catch the series on HBO, I highly recommend the DVD set.

Although I do not watch too much TV, I find the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Season 1 quite entertaining and enjoyable. Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose and Lucian Msamati are very talented. Jill Scott (Precious) was so brilliant, playing the part of the detective and taking on the challenges of the cases that were brought to her. Anika (Grace), as the 93% efficient secretary, performed very well - so meticulous and focused in her work as a secretary and later as an assistant investigator. Lucian Msamati, as the mechanic, was such a sweet gentleman and right from the get go, I knew he wanted more than friendship from Precious. The episodes were so poignant and touching - I laughed some and cried some. Even the sceneries were beautiful. I love this series and I can hardly wait for Season 2.

I was so pleased to find this video series was as pleasing as the books they were taken from. The acting is so believable. Everyone I've given this set as a gift have been delighted.

I actually bought this series as a present for my wife. I had heard some of the story line before as she borrowed the audios from the library, and listened to them as she prepared meals. I sat down the first night to watch the pilot of the series and watched them each night they were on. I loved the characters, (thanks to the author of the book) and the actors were well cast and believable. I found this set of dvds to be excellent entertainment. I liked all the characters but was especially amused by the secretary, Grace Makutsi. Also a nice message of friendship and integrity is present in the garage owner, Lucian Msamati. Buy it, you'll love it.

I had never read any of the books prior to starting to watch this series. now I am in the middle of the books, loving them and throughly enjoying the visual images that this series gave me of the characters, the location and hearing the accents, the words. I typically am disappointed by movies/series derived from books. Not this one. First of all, the series is entertaining. secondly, it inspires me. I have always wanted to go to see animals in Africa - now I want to go to Botswana to see the people. what a positive, gentle way of life! there are lessons to learn, people to love and a whole country to fall in love with! The acting is amazing. The cinematography is perfect. Trust me - I have bought these DVDs for 2 friends - it is WELL worthe the investment. Then get the books!

This is a wonderful adaptation of the books by McCall Smith. So true to the feel of the stories and more. The actors fit the characters perfectly. I can't wait to see the future series!

This set of season 1 is great for people who love mystery and shocking twists in a small town city in Africa. The characters are warm hearted and work there way up the ladder in the first town ladies Detective agency. The summary is that a young African woman's father dies and leaves a ton of cattle to her. She immediately sells the cattle and uses the profits, wits, charm, and survival skills her dad taught her to open up a detective agency. She hires a witty secretary and the town has many adventures and mystery's together, for a very fun and entertaining first season set.

After having read all the LADIES #1 DETECTIVE AGENCY books I found these DVDs to keep pretty much to the story. The scenery is gorgeous, and having been to Botswana I could find myself caught up with countryside and friendly personalities of the characters. Jill Scott makes a wonderful Precious, and ANika Noni Rose is a believeable and endearing secretary. Besides being an engaging series of books, the DVD's are well worth the cost and viewing. Hopefully Season 1 will be followed by a season 2.

I loved all of the books and now I love this version too. The characters have come to life with lessons that are just as meaningful and wisdom that is just as full as they were in the book. Filmed in Botswana with a view of the culture that is warm and inviting. I am hoping that HBO continues this program and we can benefit from future visions of the characters and their lives in Botswana.

Congratulations, HBO, you've hit another one out of the park! The books that this show is based on, an eponymous series by Alexander Smith McCall, have been well represented in this brilliant, funny, poignant show. Jill Scott is unforgettable as Precious Ramotswe, Anika Noni Rose is perfect as Grace Makutsi, and the supporting cast is charming. The stories are engaging, and the scenery of Botswana makes me want to book a flight to Africa tomorrow! This is a must see, and the books are must reads! I highly recommend them all!

This series is fantastic! It's both informative and entertaining. I watched it with my mother (who doesn't typically watch movies) on Valentine's day and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

I watched this during its showing on HBO and loved it. I bought it for Christmas for my mother who is 80 because she loves characters. I was so right as she adored it. The little secretary is so cute and her character is not one-dimensional. The actors on the show should get awards for their well as the casting director! I heartily recommend it.

Precious comes to life in this made for television series. Colorful Bostswana, colorful characters, with compelling mystery stories. This series is fine for the whole family to watch. I highly recommend Season One, which is the only season so far. Hopefully, there will be others.

As per usual with movies, a few unnecessary characters and stock situations have been added, but most of the delightful flavor of the books has been maintained. I'd buy the second season if it were available.

This wonderful series brings to life the much loved #1 Ladies Detective Agency books. Filmed on location, with a excellent cast that truely embodies their characters. It will touch your heart.

Being an avid fan of McCall-Smith, writer of the heart-warming, captivating, 'Ladies No. 1'series -- AND, after watching HBO bring the African characters of McCall-Smith's imagination to GLORIOUS life -- plus creating a few that he had NOT imagined, I knew I had to get this DVD for my permanent viewing pleasure. I hope more films based on said stories are coming down the pipe. I'll buy them all.

Have read all the books in the series and was curious to see who was cast in the series. I think their choice of the main characters was spot on. I hope they can continue another season-enjoyed it so much!

I bought this for a gift for my 79 year old mother. She has read the books and found the DVDs of the series just delightful. The characters in the books are every bit as engaging as on the HBO series. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency gets a 97 score from my mother!!!!

Phenomenal retelling of the books on screen. Jill Scott was born to play Precious. Hoping there will be more seasons to come! Please don't let it end here.

I bought the series, a couple of times, to pass on to friends and family in Canada that don't have HBO. I was a huge fan of the books and seeing the characters brought to life was enchanting. You don't have to have read the books to enjoy the series. It is a wonderful travelog for Botswana also as it is filmed on location and is beautiful. It is touching and very funny. There is a special charm about it that is hard to describe. Two of the producers of the series died and it is uncertain there will be a second season. It will be tragic if there isn't.

While I had heard a great deal about Jill Scott's performance in this series I had not seen it until recently and was amazed at the engaging characterizations and background for the stories. It was so engrossing , even my 10 year old son would watch the episodes with me. The stories are simplistic but universal. While the background is set in Africa, it could be anywhere else. Truly enjoyable and somewhat informative.
