This movie is innovative in several respects. The thing that most have written about is that it is a collaboration of the two largest movie industries in the world - the US and China, and that it didn't do well at the box office in the US and lost money internationally. Movie industry math is a study in deception. Remember the movie "My Big Fat Greek Weding?" It was filmed on a shoestring budgt, was a smash hit, and the studio worked the math so that it looked like it tanked. The people behind the film got almost nothing and the studio kept the prophets. Flim-flam arithmetic aside, this is a visually striking movie that innovatively melds the martial art, creature flick, and sword and shield genres. The acting is reasonably good, the costuming is exquisite, and the sets are extraordinary. It's a fun movie, too. There's a little sexual tension, some buddy humor, themes of honor and loyalty, and more action than you can shake a stick at. Perhaps it didn't do well at the US box office because it was too innovative, but I don't care. It's a fun movie has eye-popping visuals, and it bears watching several times.
