The Swan Princess is an animated, musical adaption of the fairy tale, "Swan Lake." An aging king (Dakin Matthews) and a widowed queen (Sandy Duncan) arrange a marriage between his only daughter and her only son, despite the two children's initial dislike of one another. Eventually they fall in love, but the evil sorcerer Rothbart (Jack Palance), desiring the throne for himself, enchants the princess Odette (Michelle Nicastro). She is a swan by day, and becomes a woman only when the moon rises. Prince Derek (Howard McGillin) refuses to accept another bride and continues to search for his lost love. When he finds her, Derek must fight the sorcerer to free her from the spell. Winner of the Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence and the Parent's Choice Award, this adventure exhibits high quality animation and a blend of romantic and humorous musical numbers. The animal characters are fun without being too cute, including Jean-Bob the frog who thinks he is a prince, given voice by John Cleese. The subtle layering of spiritual symbolism makes this film intelligent enough for adults to enjoy as well as children.

So don't expect Disney. There's only about one good song, maybe two. But it is good. I like that Odette doesn't immediately agree to marry Prince Derrek as she would if this were a "Prince Charming tale." I also like how the movie began with the "This is my Idea" song. That was cute. The movie was also funny, and showed Prince Derrek as much as it did Princeess Odette, which is good for the boys who watch it. Fairy tale movies aren't just for girls, but for boys too. It teaches the importance of inner beauty, like Beauty and the Beast. Of course, B&B was better, but this movie was still good.

I recently bought this movie and I think it's one of the better non-Disney cartoons out there. Nevertheless, like in the beloved Disney classics, Richard Richie & Co. have taken a well-known story and made it their own. And as in any great animated tale, "The Swan Princess" features a spellbinding story, remarkable characters, impressive songs, and lovely animation. It's also filled with surprises. The animal sidekicks are clever instead of cutesy, the villain is unpredictable, and the narrative isn't what you'd expect. With all the things this movie has to offer, it's amazing it's often overlooked. Still, if you're in the mood for a wonderful animated fairy tale you haven't seen a hundred times before, be sure to check out "The Swan Princess".

This is truly one of the best animated features you'll find. The songs and animation are great. It's been one of the favorites of my daughter's for years. Enjoyable for both kids and adults. (The Jack Palance evil sorcerer is a riot.) Can't recommend it enough.

I LOVE this movie!! Its great, its excellent! Its very funny, has a great script, and the characters are... well, "admirable"! The only thing is younger kids (7 and under) may be scared of Rothbart, but other than that I love this movie! Its the best... my favorite part is when Derick and his pal Bromley are playing that arrow game with the musicians. its funny! my favorite song is "Far longer than Forever". also i like the music video "Eternity" by Dreams Come True, which is found at the very end of the movie.

I first saw this movie babysitiing a little boy and girl in 1994. The little girl told me it was her favorite movie after watching it and we watched again. They are both 17 now about to graduate school and she told me that she still owns the movie and it is still her favorite.

This came out when my friends and I were around 8 years old. I remember giggling gleefully at the silly frog, quoting lines back and forth with friends, and humming along with all the songs. This movie added a lot to my imagination as a kid, and I would suggest it to anyone with kids who like funny, smart, exciting entertainment.

This was a horrible movie. If your little one likes the Disney princess movies, DO NOT buy this one. Terrible plot developement, poor singing and songwriting. My child lost complete interest after only 20 minutes when she usually is glued to the Disney princess movies.
