Director Bob Fosse's fact-based tale of Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratten's short life and gruesome death focuses less on Stratten (played by Mariel Hemingway) than on her husband/manager, sleazoid pornographer and all-around failure Paul Snider (Eric Roberts, ideally cast). He sees the young beauty as his meal ticket and sets out to pimp her in the adult entertainment business. He marries her and appoints himself her career manager; soon after, she attracts the attention of Playboy executives and wins a spot in the magazine. As her success increases however, so does Snider's alienation as he finds himself left out in the cold. His jealousy begins to consume him; she spurns him on the advice of her new friends; he goes berserk and confronts her. The same murder-suicide inspired the made-for-television Death of a Centerfold. This was choreographer/filmmaker Bob Fosse's final film.

This is the first Bob Fosse I have seen. Mariel Hemmingway was well cast as Dorothy Stratton. She was beautiful and fit in the mold as the Hugh Heffner playboy model. She also successfully played the vulnerable girl in the clenching attitude of Paul Snider."Eric Roberts was the man for this part."His pimp like possession of her blooming into gruesome jealousy and attempting to ruin her beginning "career" was well portrayed. The very end was gruesome. The bloody premonitions of the final scene showing his anger and jealousy and final scene rather turned me away from the film.

Bob Fosse's last film is an under appreciated gem. It almost works as a homage to his past greatness (LENNY, ALL THAT JAZZ) but his finale is no swan song. STAR 80 is a moving human tragedy. Eric Roberts steals the film as perpetual loser Paul Snider and creates a measurable film sleeze factor for others to follow. By the way, Mariel Hemmingway looks terrific.
