This movie tells the tale of Calpernia Addams, a male-to-female transgenderred nightclub performer who meets Barry Winchell, a military man who falls in love with her and is subsequently killed by two of his colleagues over their relatonship. I remember seeing previews for this film and anticipating that it would turn out to be something gimicky, a kind of love story with a twist of bizarre thrown in for spice. In actuallity, it is a unique love story wrapped up in a tragedy. The question of Calpernia Addams' gender becomes almost incidental by the end, something pivotal but unimportant. Her controversial decision to live as a woman is not something the director dwells on, it is merely a part of her character's makeup. It is who she is, just like the fact that Barry Winchell is from Missouri or Justin Fisher has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The film shows what happens when two people fall in love and a third party feels it is their place to disrupt it. I also have to point out the excellent acting from the three key players in this film: Lee Pace, Troy Garity and Sean Hatosy. In the hands of lesser actors, this film would have been unbelievable, but their work coupled with the careful direction of Frank Pierson make this movie a deeply important work.

This is a great movie, depicting a horrible event. It really helps you to understand what happened and why. I recomend it be shown in every high school class.

I saw this movie on Showtime when it aired and I fell in love with it. The love portrayed between Barry and Calpernia kept you right there. I really feel for the parents of Barry and for the real Calpernia. There was no need for this sensless act of violence. I think this movie shows that love is blind and that gay or straight there's no difference. I hope that everyone can learn to accept those around them.

I am not gay or nothing like that. I had a roommate that was a lesbian. She had me watch this movie with her and I cried. I did not in my wildest dream thing that I would enjoy or care about a movie like this. It was very heart warming and tender. If you do not cry at this movie then I would say that you have no soul. the love that they shared is more than any of us could ever imagine having. I just wish that I could find a love as true as what they had and what she still feels for him after all these years. I watch it every chance I get now and it is one that is at the top of my collection.

This is one of the best movies around. A romantic, yet tragic true story that is very moving and disturbing. The unique romance portrayed between the soldier, Barry Winchell and the preop transgendered Calpernia Addams was very moving. The sex scenes were done tastefully and were very erotic. The actors (Troy Garity and Lee Pace)did an excellent job of conveying the feelings that the characters had for each other. Garity portrayed Winchell with quiet grace and dignity. Pace's transformation to Addams was amazing. It was easy to forget at times that the beautiful woman on screen was a man underneath it all. Both actors were very courageous in tackling these difficult and controversial roles. The other actors also contributed to a great movie. A truely tragic love story that had the viewer pulling for the impossible for the two lovers. Showtime did an excellent job in making this movie.

This movie is amazing. I first saw it on SHOWTIME when it orginally aired. I was left stunned, amazed, and the same time. This movie was a great thing to do and Troy Garity did an excellent job in this very important movie. This movie also touches on the ground of the current 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' policy of the U.S. military. This movie was wonderfully done for such a tragic tale, but a beautiful story of love, courage, and loss. I couldn't take greater pleasure in recommending a movie to you. This movie wasn't done to be released at a theater, but this movie will touch the lives of millions, and I just want to say that I have shown this movie to at least eight people, and they are not gay or transgendered and they each loved this movie and still talk about it. I hope that everyone will see this movie at least once in their lifetime, and we can continue to move forward instead of backwards living in a world of hate and ignorance. This movie helps us do that. Everybody involved with this movie (known or unknown) is an amazing person for doing this movie, and especially Troy Garity who is an amazing and talented actor, he was definately born to do this. I just wish he would have won the Golden Globe for this role he certainly deserved it more than anyone in my opinion, he's gonna be a huge huge star, because this man CAN act!!!!

This movie keep me drawn to it from the time I saw the cover till the final credits. It is a beautiful love story in the purest form, but with all love stories there is trajedy and secrets also. I think that the producers and director did a great job casting Lee Pace as Calpernia. Being a regular of the Connections (Visions in the movie) and having meet Calpernia, he did a great job playing her in the movie.

As a MTF (male to female) transsexual, this movie hit very close to home. I grew up in a very small town in central Missouri. When i moved to the "big city" for collage I started the transition process. One evening I ran into this film and rented it, i then went on to buy it. Nothing i have ever seen has captured what its like for transgendered people and our romantic lives. Over christmas break friends of mine from home came up to see me at school, most of whom are in the military now. the most surprising thing to me was to see this big bad military boys cry over this film. They each gave me a big hug before they left to go back to their military duties. I am glad this movie came out so that i may show people who dont think trans issues effect and then later learn it does. I recomend this film to anyone, especially those in the military, those who have friends/family who are trans, or anyone who is dating a transgendered person.
