Private Duty Nurses

Private Duty Nurses

Director: George Armitage Cast: Pegi Boucher, Morris Buchanan, Cliff Carnell

New Concorde's edition of this vintage New World Pictures favorite is a competent but corner-cutting DVD that doesn't offer the kind of lovingly crafted presentation that b-movie fans have come to expect from DVD's of their old favorites. The video transfer is mediocre, offering up a cropped, full-screen image from a non-remastered source that is sometimes murky and scratchy. It's better than seeing the film on VHS but not by much: a little clean-up work would have helped this film a lot. The mono soundtrack is a solid one, delivering clean audio that highlights the film's catchy rock music score. In terms of extras, all Private Duty Nurses offers is a trio of trailers for Roger Corman's other nurse films (The Student Nurses, Night Call Nurses and The Young Nurses). Strangely, no trailer is included for Private Duty Nurses itself, which is rather disappointing. Even more disappointing is the lack of other extras: no commentary, no posters or stills, no nothing. The lack of a commentary track is especially painful here because director George Armitage has since moved on to bigger productions like Miami Blues and Grosse Pointe Blank: hearing his thoughts on his early work would have been quite illuminating for b-movie veterans. To sum up, this disc of Private Duty Nurses is acceptable for hardcore exploitation film fans but its lackluster presentation isn't likely to win the film any new fans.
