Nobody's Fool is a cut and paste romantic comedy about a self-made, wealthy New York black woman who has very high standards when it comes to dating. Her daily life includes flirting with the owner of her favorite coffee store while simultaneously being involved with her picture-perfect online boyfriend, someone she's yet to meet in real life, and never even seen on video. Tika Sumpter (Ride Along, Southside With You) plays Danica, the beautiful control-freak advertising exec with a swanky apartment. Her meticulous environment unravels when she begrudgingly begins an adventure with her newly released former drug addict and petty criminal sister, Tanya. Tanya, played by Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, The Carmichael Show), never turns down the energy, the vulgarity, or her sex drive for her own much lower standards than her sister. Haddish's performance is pure comic genius from start to finish and makes Nobody's Fool worth a watch. Why she wasn't the leading role in this film is a mystery, particularly since her over-the-top antics would make a great replacement for the Madea character that Tyler Perry announced he will be retiring in 2019. Tanya quickly picks up on the fact that Danica hasn't had any real interactions with her online boyfriend and correctly assumes that she is getting Catfished, in which a person steals someone else's pictures and acts as them. Tanya ends up stealing the scenes as she urges Danica to pursue this mystery man to make him come clean about the scam. Whoopi Goldberg brings her usual delightful charm to the supporting role of Tanya and Danica's mother. Her drug use only adds to her laid-back appeal as both their mother figure, but also as their friend. The handsome coffee store-owner/love interest Frank is played competently by Omari Hardwick (Kick-Ass, The A-Team.) His own colorful past allows Danica a chance to look at Tanya's behavior differently, which in turn allows her to change her standards so she can finally find love. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film comes with a built-in audience that Perry has cultivated for the better part of two decades, across both live and screened theaters. Perry unabashedly creates his own content, true to his own formula, and ignores most critical reviews of his work when generating new material. The bottom line is that Perry creates movies that his audience enjoys and will in turn make him money. While Nobody's Fool doesn't have the capacity to garner any critical acclaim, or push any filmmaking boundaries, it's very comfortable in doing what it sets out to do, which is to be a funny movie that people will like. Additionally, the 'R' rating won't throw off any fans, as it doesn't add much other than some language and some very tame sexy time. If you're a Tyler Perry fan, then you already know that Nobody's Fool is for you. Even if you're not part of that club, there are enough laughs to make this a comedy, though the romance lags. Set your bar low, and you will not be made a fool.
