Georgia (Nia Vardalos) came to Greece to follow a man. A few years later, she's been cast aside -- alone and adrift in a foreign land. Eventually, her passion for history leads her to a job as a tour guide. But Georgia is bored, and has lost her "kefi" (Greek for mojo) to boot. When taciturn sasquatch Poupi (Alexis Georgoulis) replaces the regular driver at the last minute, the frazzled tour guide thinks that her luck has just hit rock bottom. Thankfully, Georgia's latest batch of tourists is a more lively bunch than she's anticipated, and in between bouts with rival tour guide Nico (Alistair McGowan), she manages to form a genuine connection with wisecracking widower Irv (Richard Dreyfuss), a solo vacationer who maintains a jovial facade despite the fact that he misses his late wife dearly. With a little help from Irv, Georgia comes to realize that true love may be closer than she thinks -- if she could just recapture her kefi and open her eyes.

This is Nia Vardalos' best movie to date. I was fortunate enough to see this movie in theaters. It was laugh out loud funny, and it had those touching scenes that leave your eyes glistening. I am buying myself a copy of this movie and will watch it over and over again for many years to come. You will fall in love with all the characters on the bus tour and wish you were there with them. This is a great movie, some comedy is meant for older audiences (not children), but it will not disappoint. My Life In Ruins delivers many many laughs and leaves you feeling happy!

I'm a HUGE fan of Romantic Comedies, but I'm a picky fan. It has to be believable, it has to be funny (but not embarassing), and it HAS to have a wonderfully romantic ending. This movie perfectly fit the bill. I laughed so hard I was shaking. I cried with joy at the happy ending. I cannot wait to add this movie to my collection! I'm not sure if the summary is correct. I don't recall Georgia mentioning that she had her heart broken in Greece by the man she followed. I recall her wanting to be a college professor of Greek history - which plays in to the plot as an unexpected twist. The transformation of ALL the characters adds wonderful charm to this movie. Often in RomComs only the hero or heroine transforms and realizes the mistakes they have been making. But all the people on Georgia's tour bus undergo a transformation - a plot twist that breathes fresh air in to this seemingly overwhelmed genre. Also, the visual comedy is wonderful in this movie. There are scenes where the audience can completely relate to the trials and tribulations of Georgia regardless of whether or not they have been to Greece. Buses that don't work. Hotel staff that should be de-loused along with the rooms. Elevators that seem to only work after you've climbed the million-billion stairs. And yes, Richard Dryfus steals the show! What a brilliant actor he STILL is! If you liked "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" you'll love Nia Vardalos' "My Life in Ruins". She has such a talent for capturing the humanity (and hilarity) of her Greek culture / ancestry.

I enjoyed this movie. No, it's not going to change your life, but it's a quirky story that it delightful in its own right. It has a similar feel to My Big Fat Greek wedding with a sweet story of a woman to finds happiness in what she has.
