this movie is so much fun to watch. the dialogue makes it even more enjoyable. i love how julia robert's character, mary reilly, is intrigued by john malcovich's characters, jekell and hyde, and how they can make eye contact and you can understand what they are trying to say to each other. they don't even have to say any words. i recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys a movie that has a deeper, darker and quite odd meaning. great movie.

'Mary Reilly' is a good movie, but if you can read the original novel by Valerie Martin prior to watching, you should. I personally felt that Julia Roberts was miscast as the lead role; her acting seemed awkward and stiff. John Malkovich was excellent in his dual role as Jekyll/Hyde. My major complaint about this movie was that it was sexualized much more than necessary. There was very little of it in the original novel, and the character of Mary Reilly was made to be much more naieve than she was in the novel. On the plus side, the atmosphere and overall feel of the movie was poignant; I felt that the film did a good job preserving the emotional climax of the story. 'Mary Reilly' is worth a watch for any fans of science fiction, Gothic romance, or someone just looking for a bit of escapism.

Everyone knows Julia Roberts as a sunny, comedic and larger than life actress, but she plays dark and dramatic just as well. In this sleeper, she plays a junior houskeeper with an abusive past to the classic Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde duo, (played to perfection by John Malcovich) learning not just his secrets but all about his tortured inner self. She brings out the lamb in this lion and with a pretty good accent! A must for all Roberts' fans.

This was an interesting movie and the story was familiar. Basically about Jekyll and Hyde.

This might be Julia Roberts' best work. Mary Reilly is the naive, hardworking, timid servant girl who is at once capitvated and repulsed by the strange new world of Dr. Jekyl. He, meanwhile, is the aloof, erudite scientist who is unexpectedly attracted to the servant girl with scarred arms. Dr. Jekyl is profoundly transformed by her quiet innocence and compassion -- a change that finally becomes his ruin. The film adeptly develops these complex characters. Malkovick and Roberts possess a strange and undeniable chemistry that perfectly complements this film's odd mix of horror and romance. You will be surprised.

This film as great. The characters are wondeful, you can feel their passions. I loved the chemistry between Julia Roberts and John Malkovich. There's no denying that this is a cult classic with a softer, sexier side. I deffinatly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark, bold and mesmerizing piece of cinema!, July 24, 2010 By Ankur Mukherjee - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Mary Reilly (DVD) Wow! indeed an amazing tale that will never fail to keep you engaged from the beginning to the very end. I am not much of a fan of Julia Roberts, but this film really grabbed my attention towards her, my eyes were glued to the screen witnessing her every move, every motion, catching every bit of her emotion throughout the film, she delivers such a precise, fine performance that you simply remain out of words. A fine, fabulous performance from John Malkovich, a fine flesh and blood of a true artist and actor indeed. Everything from the dark atmosphere to the score will surely keep you engaged enough and do watch out for some really good performances.

I've seen this movie before and I sorta liked it. Even though it's not what I hoped it to be. Still it's Jekyll and Hyde. I love Musicals and I have a musical version of this on dvd. This one is a bit to bloodish. I don't know if Bloodish is a word but it fits. And I believe it to be a little scary in some parts. I try to watch by my self but I was not to happy with it.
