Overview

Or maybe because I'd read the book first, I expected too much. I've read all of James Lee Burke's books and often wished I could see them as movies, but it's harder to put action+story on the screen well. The acting was great; Tommy Lee Jones was a perfect Robicheaux. The story was accurate; easy for me to follow, but difficult for my friend to follow (she hadn't read the book first).

Tommy Lee Jones, John Goodman and Peter Sarsgaard all star in this movie, based off the book! Most the other reviewers seem to have read the book (In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead by James Lee Burke), I haven't, but I did enjoy the movie anyway. It's not a high budget thriller, its a low budget mystery with a good storyline and great cast. Tommy Lee Jones (the good guy), John Goodman (one of several bad guys), Ned Beatty and Peter Sarsgaard (the middle man) make this movie work! Great cast, good story, a "B" movie that probably isn't on your radar, but one that is definitely worth watching!

Although I wasn't quite sure how I would react, I had to buy this movie as soon as it was released. I really enjoyed it, more so than I thought I would. And I was especially impressed with the way James Lee Burke's incredible talent for scene-setting was brought to life. The choice of Tommy Lee Jones as Dave Robicheaux was a given. As I've read and loved each of JLB's novels, I've pictured Jones as the protagonist. He was excellent in the role. While the movie is a bit different from the novel, which I think is one of Burke's best, the plot and pace hold the viewer's attention. The book was written before Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and the movie is set in post-Katrina Louisiana, but the updates were made fairly seamlessly. While this is not an Oscar-worthy movie, it is solid entertainment and fans of Burke's writing should not be disappointed.

I, along with other JLB fans, had been waiting a long time to see this film. A disappointment that it never went to the big screen, but straight to DVD. I found the acting, scenery and filming to all be top notch, but difficult to tie the story together, though I'd read the book. I'd give it a 3.5 if halfs were possible here. I found out this version of the film is 15 minutes shorter than the Director's Cut, which appears to have made a hash of logical process. A shame the Director's Cut is not available in DVD, I would have liked to have seen that.

James Lee Burke's wonderful Dave Robicheaux novels stand as benchmarks of detective fiction. However only two of over fifteen novels in the series have been brought to the screen. This dvd represents the better of those two efforts. A serial killer is preying upon young women, a long-dead corpse has been found in the water, and a movie crew financed by mobster 'Baby Feet' Balboni has come to the New Iberia area to create a feature film. All of these elements lead to a final resolution in this well written screenplay that is mostly faithful to Burke's novel. Tommy Lee Jones is dead on target as Dave Robicheaux, John Goodman is excellent as Balboni, and production values are high throughout the film. Director Tavernier handles those sequences involving Robicheaux's visions of dead Confederate soldiers well, with the potential for those passages to look silly in a visual medium avoided. Burke's measured pacing of a resolution remains here in the film. Robicheaux's frequent self examination and reflection that are present in the novels' first-person narrative sadly cannot be adequately brought to the screen although Jones handles the characterization well. Highly recommended, although I also recommend reading the books first.
