The now-legendary miniseries Holocaust first aired as a presentation in NBC's Big Event series. Written by Gerald Green, the story begins in the Germany of 1935. We are introduced to the family of Jewish doctor Joseph Weiss (Fritz Weaver) his wife Berta (Rosemary Harris), his brother Moses (Sam Wanamaker), his sons Rudi (Joseph Bottoms) and Karl (James Woods), and his daughter Anna (Blanche Baker). We also meet struggling lawyer Erik Dorf (Michael Moriarity), who is urged by his ambitious wife to join the SS. As the Nazis' persecution of the Jews is stepped up, most of the Weiss family is deported to the Polish ghetto--then to Auschwitz, which is overseen by Erik Dorf. Rudi and his Jewish girlfriend Helena (Tovah Feldsuh) witness the 1941 Baba Yar massacre, then join the Russian partisans in their battle against the Nazis. Also appearing in Holocaust is Meryl Streep as Karl Weiss' Christian wife Inga. The winner of eight Emmy awards, Holocaust was originally telecast in four parts on April 16, 17, 18, and 19, 1978.

I make an effort to watch every movie about The Shoah. This is the first time I can remember picking one apart. For my money, I'll take Winds of War/War and Remembrance over this any day.

For a fictional account, it is very well written and acted. WARNING: Do NOT watch this miniseries before bedtime. I made that mistake; each time I closed my eyes, I saw SS uniforms.

&quot Holocaust&quot is a sweeping epic, intertwining the stories of two German families-- the prominent Jewish Weiss family who's fate becomes inextricably intertwined with the lower class Dorf family, the latter who's patriarch becomes a reluctant high-ranking officer in the Nazi Party-- from the last Golden years of the thirties to the end of the horrific World War II. This tumultuous miniseries boldly demonstrates the extreme good and evil humans are capable of. It shows how &quot good&quot people- like Erik Dorf- can come to commit atrocities against other humans, and on the other hand, show how the Jewish people- despite being stripped of all remnants of their humanity- struggle to hold on to their sanity and remember the fact that they are human. This brilliant miniseries, which ranks right up their with &quot Roots&quot and &quot Angels in America&quot presents a heart-wrenching portrait of their struggle.
