Five young German friends find their lives torn apart when

Hindenburg). Called to serve his country when fighting erupts on the eastern front, decorated officer Willhelm (
Volker Bruch) races off to the battlefield alongside his nervous younger sibling Friedhelm (
Tom Schilling). Meanwhile, hopeful that her true love Wilhelm will soon return to her, optimistic nurse Charlotte (
Miriam Stein) opts to serve in the Red Cross. But the horrors Charlotte witnesses quickly erode her youthful idealism, and as her best friend Greta (Katharina Schüettler) aspires to become a famous singer, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor (
Ludwig Trepte) attempts to survive by blending in with the Polish Resistance.
