This trio of short films based on Han Christian Andersen's timeless stories is a perfect fit for the Scholastic Video Collection. Author and illustrator Nadine Bernard Westcott has brought some Respect-the-Man revisionism to the title story, affording the vain clotheshorse king the dignity of seeing the error of his ways, while the two scoundrels who conned him live unhappily ever after. For "the Ugly Duckling," Ernest V. Troost's evocative score and Lynn Whitfield's warm narration give flight to illustrator Jerry Pinkney's Caldecott Honor book. The lesser-known story, "The Swineherd," tells about a spoiled princess who gets her comeuppance from an incognito prince. This is yet another exemplary showcase for literary-based short films that otherwise enjoy scant exposure outside of the classroom or film festivals.
