Doris Day looks no more like the real Calamity Jane than you or I do, but this 1953 film is intended as a lighthearted musical, not a historical tract. As portrayed by the freckled Ms. Day, Jane is a rootin', tootin' shootin' hoyden in the western town of Deadwood. When she isn't tearing up the town, Jane spends her time cussing out Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel). The plot gets under way when Jane promises the citizens of Deadwood that she can persuade classy Chicago stage star Adelaide Adams (Gale Robbins) to perform at the local opry house. Through a case of mistaken identity, Jane brings Adelaide's maid Katie (Allyn Ann McLerie) back to town. Katie proves to be a success all the same, and out of gratitude promises to make a "lady" out of Jane, who is sweet on handsome Lt. Gilmartin (Philip Carey). When the lieutenant chooses Katie over Jane, our heroine is heartbroken--until she realizes that she has loved Wild Bill Hickok all along, and that the feeling is mutual so far as Hickok is concerned. The peppy musical score by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster includes the Oscar-winning "Secret Love," which became a million-selling hit for Doris Day.

I have always loved watching old movies and this one is one of my favorites. I love Doris Day. If you liked this movie, you would probably like some of the following: On Moonlight Bay, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, or That Touch of Mink. I am very excited that this movie is available on DVD now.

sometimes, howard keel is NOT the ideal man. he leaves his wife, can be childish and selfish, has an enormous ego, struggles with over the top jealousy, this is the way it is almost every time. don't get me wrong, I love him anyway for his voice and when he is romantic, but he can be very reminiscent of the movie bus stop, because don murray doesn't treat marilyn monroe the way he should. well, in THIS movie, howard is PHENOMINAL. I thought he had the sweetest characteristics as bill hickok, which considering how the real bill hickok was, is hard to imagine. he and doris day's chemistry is undeniable, and i love their relationship even before they realize they love eachother. howard never messes things up, and I love that they let him be the nice guy they ENTIRE time, not just the beginning or end. I bought this on a whim, having never seen a doris movie and a type cast view of howard after show boat, seven brides for seven brothers, kiss me kate, and annie get your gun. Please just get this one, you'll love the way it plays out, and doris day is a real gem. i couldn't stop singing secret love (her oscar winning song and biggest hit) after i watched it! the made up story is better than the story of the real calamity jane and wild bill hickok :)

What a FANTASTIC movie! Simply Delightful! You will fall in love with Doris the actress in this film. She owned this one! Doris Day and Howard Keel have perfect chemistry as Calamity and Wild Bill in this movie. They steal the show with their electrifying performance together! This is not just a musical. It's packed with adventure, comedy and romance. It's very colorful and full with excitement. The character Calamity is unpredictable and keeps you at the edge of your seat! But, at the same time you can relate to her and you even find yourself cheering her on. So, hold on tight and enjoy the ride! This is a Must See for Everyone!

This musical has a good cast and enjoyable music. Even though it might not be historically correct, it is pure entertainment. It is also a good way to introduce young viewers to the value of a good wholesome comedy. I can watch it over and over and still get a kick out of it.

I've enjoyed every film with Doris Day but this one is the best. Can't understand why it hasn't become a West End or Broadway show - or has it? The top-selling Secret Love is far from being its best song.

Doris Day met her match when she plays Clamity Jane. She is a perfect person to play Clamity Jane.
