Ren Mihashi was the ace pitcher for his middle school, but his team, especially his catcher, believed he had the position only because Mihashi's grandfather owned the school. The team hated him and blamed their losing every game on Mihashi. Now Mihashi is at a new school, Nishiura high, and with his love of baseball outweighing his lack of confidence he tries out for the team. His new catcher, Abe, quickly realizes that what Mihashi lacks in power he more than makes up for with surgical precison, being able to place the ball wherever Abe calls it. Mihashi becomes Nishiura's ace. With the support of his team, he grows in confidence and begins to believe that the number one on his back is there because he earned it. The series begins with the formation of Nishiura's first baseball team which ends up being composed of only ten players, all freshman. It follows the team through training, a practice game against Mishashi's old team, and the first game of the summer tournament against the previous year's winners. The animation is very well done. The characters are engaging and I found myself cheering them on, hoping that they would win. The tension of the games is nicely balances with touches of humor. A knowledge of baseball isn't necessary to follow the plot. I love this series. I'm go glad I took a chance on it and added it to my collection. Note that while the box says complete series, it is only Season 1. Season 2 aired in Japan during the summer of 2010, and unfortunately, as of this writing, Funimation does not plan to pick it up.
