Director John Woo's classic and extremely influential gangster melodrama A Better Tomorrow is given modest treatment on DVD by Anchor Bay. But frankly, the film has never looked or sounded as good as it does on this disc; viewers can safely discard their videotapes with dropping subtitles or the inferior English-dubbed tape. The picture here is always sharp and consistent and the Cantonese-language option in Dolby Surround 5.1 is appropriately punchy. The film's other language option is a mono English-dubbed soundtrack. Unlike Criterion's out of print DVDs of the Woo classics The Killer and Hard-Boiled -- or Fox's re-releases of the same films -- Anchor Bay has unfortunately decided not to include a director's commentary track on this disc or for its sequel A Better Tomorrow II. The disc also includes the theatrical trailer (in Cantonese or English) and talent bios of iconic mega-star Chow Yun-Fat and director Woo. The film is presented in its original widescreen format (1.85:1), enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs.
