The first feature from the 20th Century-Fox animation unit in Phoenix, Arizona, this is the ninth film produced and directed by the Don Bluth/Gary Goldman duo (An American Tail) and the first animated feature to be made in CinemaScope since Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959). This $50 million animated fantasy retells the story of Anastasia, daughter of Czar Nicholas, beginning with her childhood in 1916 Russia. After Rasputin's curse on the Romanovs, little Anastasia is separated from her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Maria. After growing up in an orphanage, Anastasia emerges as a young woman called Anya. With no clear memory of her youth, Anya encounters entrepreneurs who seek an Anastasia look-alike in hopes of collecting a reward in Paris from the aged Dowager Empress. Despite demonic interference from Rasputin, the three travel to Paris where another problem awaits: the Dowager Empress is now skeptical of the parade of imposters.

Let me first say I lvoe this movie,I've seenit thousands of times know the songs I think its a greta movie!Though it is almost completely NOT historically accurate...I'm not going to start on what they got wrong...this had a happy ending,The ture story Im sad to say did not,it was sad and horrifying the true story BUT this lighter version is great for kids!

When I saw this movie trailer I really wanted to see it.... I saw it 3 years later and thought it was good. Then It was on durring Fox and I saw it again. Then we bought it and I wqtched it over and over. The music and the songs were really good but the songs I liked were ''At the Beginning'' the song that played at the end of the movie. This is a treasure I love it so much.. And I enjoy it...This is a movie that should b made into a live action musical someday.......But until then this movie is great!

It touched my heart as I saw the traditional royal dance of Anastasia's memories in the very old St.Petersburg palace. The animation of the royal dancers Were very natural, as they were waltzing together in a very romantic and unique pattern. The other thing that impressed me the most was the secret between the royal necklace of Anastasia and the antique-like music box which plays a very beautiful and classical lullaby. The most romantic sence that I believed was the change of heart of the profit minded Dimitri who couldn't help himself to fall in love with the courageous and beautiful young grand duchess. Dimitri refused to accept the reward of riches form the Russia queen because of his understanding of the splendid love between Anastatia & her grandmom. Since so many pretenders had broken the heart of the long-waiting, lonely and desperate royal queen who was so sensitive of being cheated and hurt through all these lonely years. I love the beautiful ending of the love birds, one gave up her royal crown for her true love who had protected and rescued her from many dangers; on the other hand, he who gave up the desire of the royal riches for his only love....the real ANASTATIA !!!

This is one of the best animated films of all time. The music is infectuous, the romantic banter between Anya and Dimitri is hilarious, and this movie is appealing to all ages (my dad loves it) and you'll find yourself watching it again and again. The real history behind the fall of the Romanovs: Rasputin was a "healer" of the Romanov's son, the heir to the Russian throne who suffered from hemophillia, and while creepy, he was murdered before the people's revolution. Actually, the movie got this part right (in a way); Rasputin died from drowning in an icy river after being stabbed, shot, and beaten. Czar Nicholas abdicated and he and his family exiled to a small house in Siberia where Nicholas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Marie, Anastasia, and Alexi lived until the order came through to have them all murdered. The unfortunate family was taken to the basement and told to stand for pictures, then shot by a firing squad and all but two (probably Anastasia and Alexi) were buried together near an old mine. The rumor that Anastasia had survived the Russian revolution was the insiration for this heartwarming tale. Though you won't learn any true history from this truly amazing film, it greatly deserves your attention.

I am a 19 year old college student, and when I go to the video store I still look for and rent this movie. I love the plot, the music, and especially the building romance between Anastasia and Dimitri. If they turned this version of the Anastasia story into a stage production I would be in the front row on opening night!

This is a very good movie. But the reason that i only gave it 4 stars is because not alot of it is true. When anastasias family died she was 18 not eight, she never fell in love with dmitri because he was her cousin, rasputin was actually pretty nice but he still was a little scary, vladimir was one of the people who killed anastasia family and after the revolution anastasia never saw her grandma again.

i think this movie was had a pretty good story, and they obviously wouldn't have told the exact truth, but the story was a good though.

I just rediscovered 'Anastasia' and I must say that it's the best non-Disney animated feature there is. But before I can continue praising it,I'd like to point out some flaws. I thought it was disgusting the way Rasputin keep falling apart. I also think that the songs 'Learn To Do It' and 'Par-ee Holds the Key to Your Heart' are annoying. I was very ashamed at the way Vlad and Dimitri took advantage of Anya and played with her feelings. But back to the praise. Although a couple of songs are bad, the rest are outstanding(especially 'Journey to the Past','Once Upon a December',and 'At the Beginning').The story and characters are equally amazing(especially Anastasia herself and Bartok).I was glad when Dimitri and Vlad found out that Anya was really Anastasia and started to see through her eyes. And it was cool when Anastasia destroyed Rasputin without Dimitri's help. The ending(in which Dimitri marrys Anastasia and Bartok meets that girl bat) is adorable and sweet.I totally recommend this movie to anyone who has dreamed of being royalty.

This movie can give kids hope and comfort them in a way.. Sure most of it is not true, yet it's the music and the magic that make it believable and wonderful!

Very interesting storyline, and also, i enjoyed the songs. I would like to reccomend this movie for people that are five and up. Actually, I think that anyone can see it , it is very entertaining and very fun. Great movie to watch with the family. Also, a good movie to see on Broadway, if they ever perform it there. Anyone who likes a musical, will adore this movie!
