We're not certain that each of the 14 movies compiled in this deluxe box set rates the "masterpiece" designation, but there's no arguing that the lion's share of them fall into that category. For example, Shadow of a Doubt (1942), starring Joseph Cotten as a murderer who hides from the police by staying with unsuspecting family members, has been consistently underrated. Rear Window (’54) never ceases to impress, and Hitchcock's ’56 remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, starring James Stewart and Doris Day, is even better than the director's much-praised ’34 version. Although the gimmicky Rope (’48), shot in a series of ten-minute "takes," comes off today as overly theatrical and self-satisfied, it still commands respect for the ingenuity needed to pull it off. The Trouble with Harry (’56) continues to delight lovers of black comedy, a subgenre rarely explored -- but definitely appreciated -- by this gifted filmmaker. Psycho (’60) remains the definitive Hitchcock shocker for many fans, although devotees who've studied the director's life believe that Vertigo (’58), a gripping study of obsession, is far more illustrative of Hitch's personality. And who can forget the simple, unadulterated creepiness of The Birds (’62)? Terrific movies, all of them. So much so, in fact, that the relative weakness of Saboteur (’42), Marnie (’64), Torn Curtain (’66), Topaz (’69), Frenzy (’72), and Family Plot (’76) might seem more apparent due to their inclusion in this collection with the better films. Happily, the good far outweighs the middling, and the box set is tailor-made for thriller fans eager to get heavily Hitched.
