With their work in Luscious Jackson and the Breeders, respectively, Vivian Trimble and Josephine Wiggs helped shape the sound of '90s alt rock. But with their new project, Dusty Trails, these ladies aim for a more timeless sound inspired by French pop, Brazilian lounge, and film composers such as Ennio Morricone. Trimble and Wiggs use guitar, organs, keyboards, and touches of maracas, strings, and horns to whip up an airy mousse of sounds, sometimes flavored by Trimble's sweet vocals or guest vocals by Emmylou Harris ("Order Coffee"). If you overlook one or two sleepy instrumentals that come dangerously close to elevator music, there are plenty of enticing tracks here, from the groovy bounce of "Roll the Dice" to the urban cowgirl sounds of "Fool for a Country Tune" to the breezy French pop of "Est-ce Que Tu." While the sounds of Dusty Trails might surprise to Luscious Jackson and Breeders fans, Trimble and Wiggs have created a new identity that understatedly oozes coolness and class.
