Classic western romance from a veteran of the genre.

Reese Duncan lost half his ranch and all his dreams to his ex-wife, so when it came time for a family he did the logical thing: he advertised for a bride. She had to be willing to work, to bear his children and to settle for lovemaking in place of love. It sounded perfect... until Madelyn Patterson arrived.

One look and he had to have her. Never mind that she was New York and nightlife to his own plain-spoken Montana ways. She was willing to herd cattle, wax floors and bake biscuits by the dozen. She was even willing to bear his children - but at a price he couldn't pay. She wanted love... and he was a man.

This is a first time regular print hardcover edition of a title previously available as a mass market paperback.

into life on a Montana ranch & great romance. **spolier alert** I very much appreciated the addition of the birth to cap the story off. Thanks LH!

I love this book and have kept it since it first came out. A nice play with the mail order bride, embittered Reese just wants a wife, but Maddie is more than he bargained for. It's wonderfully sensual and it also has an emotional core. I believed in these characters and believed in their love. So it's a keeper and a reread for me. Vintage, excellent Howard.

Cross one sophisticated, slow-moving Southern lady with a blunt, hard-working, suspicious Montana rancher, and what do you get? Sparks. The premise may be a bit dated, but Madelyn and Reese are still perfect for one another.

Duncan's Bride by Linda Howard (Audio Edition) Narrated by Lesa Lockford Series: Patterson-Cannon Family #1 I bumped this book up to 3 stars, due to the writing and narration as these were both well done. However, I just could not abide the hero. He was such a jealous stubborn jerk! The way he treated Maddie, and the things he said to her were terrible and uncalled for. Maybe I am jaded, but I don’t see this kind of person changing their ways, and I would not enjoy being in this kind of relationship, so I can’t understand why the heroine would want to. Personally I think a man can still be “Alpha” and be able to treat people with respect. To give Maddie some credit, she didn’t take Reece’s crap.. Which was good. She stood her ground and made choices for herself. I did think she fell in love a bit too fast.. But hey.. ya never know right? If you are looking for a story, where the hero has trouble getting over his past, and realizing his future… this may be a great story for you. Lesa Lockford did a great job with her narration. She had a very calm relaxing attitude for Maddie's character which I thought fit well and her Gruff, no nonsense voice worked perfectly for Reece. ~Paragraphs and Petticoats~

It was a classic love story. The characters were great and the descriptions of the locale made you feel like you were there. The mail order slant was a bit hard to believe but overall the story was wonderful.

Maddie and Reese were such great characters! Although I found the mail-order bride scenario hard to believe, once these two were together, they were perfect for each other. Reese was a typical stubborn male, and Maddie never let him get away with anything. If you're looking for a romance with steamy love scenes, strong characters and great descriptions of location and everyday life, this is it!

I loved this book. Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors and she definitely delivered with this book. I love how Madelyn was able to handle a tough guy like Reese.
