Overview

The #1 New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award winning authors are back with an electrifying new novel that will leave your heart racing.

Kendra Michaels, formerly blind and now a hired gun for law enforcement agencies who relies on her razor-sharp powers of observation, is reluctant to help the FBI with the most recent case they’ve brought to her. But then she hears the details: the body was found just blocks away from Kendra’s condo. The young woman was carrying an envelope with Kendra’s name on it, and inside was an SD card with what appears to be an innocuous video of a wedding reception. The woman died trying to get the video to Kendra, but for what purpose? Before Kendra and the FBI can answer that question, the bride is abducted from her suburban home.

And so the hunt is on for a killer whose nightmarish plan is slowly becoming clear. A plan that involves a powerful law firm and a multi-billion dollar corporation. As the body count rises, Kendra joins forces with private investigator Jessie Mercado and agent-for-hire Adam Lynch to stop the plot as it grows ever closer to its terrifying conclusion.

In Double Blind, Iris and Roy Johansen deliver an emotional, gripping new entry in the bestselling Kendra Michaels series.

Praise for the Kendra Michaels series:

"This read goes from good to great to spectacular as the hunt between predator and prey never stops. As always behind the name ‘Johansen’ in reviews, this is a definite 5-Star." —Suspense Magazine on The Naked Eye

"A complex cat-and-mouse game...[will] keep [readers] eagerly anticipating the next installment." —Booklist on Sight Unseen

"Gripping...the authors combine idiosyncratic yet fully realized characters with dry wit and well-controlled suspense that builds to a satisfying conclusion." —Publishers Weekly on Close Your Eyes

Oh my… another winner from Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen. I started the Kendra Michaels series about 2 books back and have not been able to pass up reading them. They are books that I know will entertain, keep my attention, and make me think while reading them. With Double Blind we find Kendra pulled into another FBI investigation where someone is targeting guests at a wedding. A video of the wedding is given to Kendra and that is her only clue to start the investigation. While it was never really shared how Kendra had anything to do with the wedding, I came to the conclusion that her reputation was the reason that she was given the video with the assumption that her amazing skills to solve crimes would be put to use. Of course, this is exactly what Kendra does. The crime part was interesting and I can easily see how it will feed into future books in this series but what I really enjoyed was the relationship between Kendra and Lynch. They circled each other, pushed each other, and never really confessed their feelings. I feel like they trust and like each other a lot but they don’t know how to open their hearts and lives to allow them to accept each other in their everyday lives. Double Blind’s ending set it up for there to be much more to come for these wonderful characters and I am excited to see where it will lead.

Kendra Michaels was blind from birth. Until she wasn’t; due to a rare, successful stem cell surgery. While she was blind, her determined, brilliant mother decided that Kendra was going to grow up to extraordinary. Kendra thought this was a fine idea, and in furtherance of this goal developed her other senses to an almost otherworldly degree. Even when Kendra gained her sight, she still honed this talent of noticing what most of us have always missed. This ability did not go unnoticed by the FBI, and they have often made use of her talents. As Kendra remarks upon during a self-defense lesson with Adam Lynch, there have been 26 attempts on her life; which might be a record for a well known musical therapist working with autistic kids. Not surprisingly, Kendra is not always pleased to be drawn into their cases as a consultant. Luckily she always has Lynch, the man called upon by governments or their agencies for special jobs. Lynch is almost always at Kendra’s side or at her back when she is consulting. Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego office FBI office, Michael Griffin personally recruits Kendra into an hours old case. A woman has purposely run into traffic and been killed a few blocks from Kendra’s home. The police have found an envelope containing a memory stick with Kendra’s name on it. (This would really by the only reason the FBI would be called to a murder scene, unless it was a known a known part of a series. You are welcome). The memory stick contains a video of a lovely wedding reception. Nothing overtly remarkable about the video, until members of the wedding party begin to disappear. Kendra and best friend Olivia use their skills to unravel and try to stop the upcoming deaths the video portends. Adam Lynch and Jessie Mercado, a private detective and friend to Kendra, are also determined to stay involved with Kendra’s case when they discover the presence of a quasi-government security agency. Both Mercado and Lynch have experiences with this company. Kendra and Olivia are intriguing, strong women. They are super-women of the realistic kind, not the comic book variety. They live their lives to the fullest, and show extraordinary skill, grace and determination. Double Blind is darker than previous books in the series. Stretched to her limits by heartbreak, Kendra is forced to understand she can’t always protect her loved ones, a circle wider than previously she previously admits. Pacing and a plot that makes the book hard to put down, Double Blind is a terrific addition to the Kendra Michael series. I always suggest reading an entire series so as not to miss out, but its fine to start with this one because of the stellar summation in my first two paragraphs. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Amateurish dialog and unreal plots. I feel ripped off!

If you are a fan of Iris Johansen, you will enjoy this story. If you have read any of the Kendra Michaels books, this is another suspenseful story involving her well-honed senses that she developed while she was blind and trained after her successful stem cell surgery. There is not as much of her life dealing with music therapy in this book, which I missed. Once again, Michael Griffin, Special Agent in charge of the San Diego FBI office, draws Kendra into a case involving dead and missing women. A woman has purposely run into traffic and been killed a few blocks from Kendra’s home. The police have found an envelope containing a memory stick with Kendra’s name on it. Luckily she has Lynch, the man called upon by governments or their agencies for special jobs. Lynch stays at Kendra’s side while she is consulting on this case. As usual, she becomes a target from the psychopath that she and the FBI are trying to find. Jessie Mercado, a private detective and friend to Kendra, also makes an appearance to help Kendra with some surveillance. Olivia, Kendra's best friend is also important to the story in both the hero and victim role. The women in this story are strong, smart, have amazing skills, are determined and close to fearless. They are also loyal to one another and their true friends. The pacing and plot kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I am finding that these books are still enjoyable, but not necessarily as heart pounding as they were when I started reading them. The writing and story are still good, it is my interest that is waning somewhat. This is a series that does not have to be read in order, but as characters have been added to it, it will help you understand about the relationships if you do. The publisher, St. Martin's Press, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.

Double Blind – Iris Johansen & Roy Johansen I was fortunate to receive this novel from Netgalley.com as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review. Kendra Michaels is a music therapist with a special gift for sensing things that others cannot. Born blind, she honed her other senses as a child, before a miraculous stem cell treatment restored her sight. As a result, her special abilities are frequently called upon by the FBI. Adam Lynch is a former FBI operative, who now freelances wherever needed. He and Kendra have a mutual respect – and something more – that Kendra declines to examine too closely. Kendra calls upon him frequently to hone her self defense skills. They are working on such, as the novel opens. Meanwhile, a young woman with a gunshot wound is fleeing her killer, desperate to get an envelope to Kendra. She bursts out of an alley, and into a city street where she is struck by a vehicle and killed. The police find the envelope addressed to Kendra, but Kendra is mystified. She did not know the woman, and the enclosed flash drive holds only the video of a wedding reception, for a couple that Kendra has never met. Intrigued by the situation, both Kendra and Adam begin to investigate. Then the bride of the video is seemingly kidnapped from her home, and a quest for answers leads to a near death experience for both Kendra and Adam. As they race to find answers, they find themselves pitted against a powerful organization that seemingly will stop at nothing to keep some secrets buried… This book takes off like a runaway train and doesn’t stop until you turn the last page! Strong heroic characters, relentless action, and enough sexual tension to keep you coming back for more! I can’ wait for the next installment of the Kendra Michaels series!! A great read!!

A poor attempt at clever banter. The book is made up of mostly dialogue that is attempting to be witty. However, it falls short and winds up being worn and tired . More attention should have been given to the plot and moved that along. Would not recommend.

This book had such elementary dialogue and such an absurd rushed storyline it was difficult to finish reading it. Do not recommend.

With words from the killer “remember I know you better than you know yourself” Kendra sounds like an ordinary person with an unusual job. Doing music therapy, and double blind experiments, she helps people and gets results. Griffen with the FBI Is trying to recruit her, meanwhile, a case with her name on it. Kendra didn’t know her, though envelope had her name on it. Great start to this story, you have the players, you have the name of the corpse, now we want to know why. Her name was Elena, she ran into traffic, as a bullet entered her chest. You are captured, by another book in this series. Good flowing plot, and one loves the characters. Given ARC by Net Galley and St Martin publishers

Engaging, fast-paced action and suspense… This is the sixth book in the Kendra Michaels series that can be read as a stand-alone. No matter how hard Kendra Michaels endeavors to stay away from assisting in criminal investigations for the FBI and other law enforcement agencies she still gets drawn in, her inquisitive intelligence and the unique abilities she retained after gaining sight years ago make her especially effective at solving complex cases. She deserves the reputation she’s garnered. When a woman she doesn’t know is killed, on her person was a video of a wedding reception and a note leading to Kendra and she’s obligated to view it. Though she doesn’t fathom what the video was supposed to tell her, Kendra feels empathy for the victim who reached out to her and that has her wanting to solve the woman’s murder and those that follow. Having built her own resources outside of the FBI, Kendra’s supported by the private investigator Jesse Mercado and the man known as the puppet master, Adam Lynch, who freelances for the government and countries that need his special talents and a man who she has conflicted feelings about. They are two bad-ass individuals who have no qualms doing what needs to be done and more importantly are trusted. Kendra will need their assistance as she mentally combats a rogue psychopath who knows of her successes and has planned for dealing with her once she becomes involved, he knows the ways to torment her and won’t hesitate to use them. This was engaging, fast-paced action and suspense with intriguing characters, an intricate mystery and a nefarious villain protected by greedy individuals wanting to cover their backs. The relationship between Kendra and Lynch attains new heights and added complications. In this series, the characters constantly evolve as events lead them to epiphanies that stretch their boundaries. The ending surprisingly and nicely sets the stage for the next book. An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley. 4.5 stars
