Overview

When Beth Dolinsky's military husband returns from deployment with post-traumatic stress and gambles all their money away, this mousy, church-going housewife and mother of twin boys has to take matters into her own hands. Against the advice of friends and family, 40-year-old Beth applies to become a deputy sheriff and embarks on the toughest journey of her life. Now, Recruit Dolinsky finds herself out of place in her new world, even though she no longer fits into her old one. As Beth fights for her family and her right to hold this position of strength, she must convince not only the inmates in the jail, but also the "squared-away" sergeants and deputies half her age (with double the attitude) that she really can fire a gun, perform strip searches that would make even the toughest inmate squirm, restrain men twice her size, and control 70 criminals with the strategic use of the f-word. And in the process, Beth manages to convince herself that she can handle anything that comes her way. DISHRAGS TO DIRTBAGS is a story of inner strength, motherhood, reinvention, and acceptance.

"A surprisingly intimate view of the relationship and mutual respect between this deputy and her inmates. It's a must-read!" Rosalie Pope, Author of PUPPIES FOR SALE $25, winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award

** spoiler alert ** *Received book in exchange for honest review* Beth is a church going housewife whose husband just returned from overseas and Beth has the unpleasant surprise that he has gambled away all of their money, to include their savings. To try and put things back to normal for her family, Beth starts looking into a job for herself, something she hasn't had. She decided to become a deputy sheriff, much to the dismay of her friends and her increasingly unsupportive ass of a husband. Does she have what it takes to go through the academy and get the job?? I enjoyed this book a lot as I saw Beth go from "soccer mom" to deputy. The only thing I wish I saw more of what happened with her friends as initially they seemed to think that she thought she was too good for them when they asked about stories for work and then Beth seemed to reconnect with 2 of them later on in the book, but it seemed to be left open ended a little. And it mentioned how Beth knew that this would be her last year with her husband, but I wish I got to see her confronting her ass of a husband about this as she grew more as a person and would begin standing up to him. And damn it, I wish she was able to at least make a friend or two at the jail instead of growing apart from the one she did have. But all in all in the end, it was enjoyable to read about Beth's journey and see how she was a successful deputy at the end and enjoyed her job and made a difference to the inmates
