A three-record set spanning the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's career from its first album in 1967 to 1976, Dirt, Silver and Gold features all of the band's hits, including "Buy for Me the Rain," "Mr. Bojangles," "Battle of New Orleans," and the historic "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." The compilation also showcased many odds and ends (hence the "Dirt" in the title) that blend in nicely with the rest of the selections. If anyone is wondering about the Dirt Band pre-1976, this excellent collection is where they should begin.

I love this album, playing it daily while in college. I am holding out right now from buying CD since all songs were remastered and do not sound like the ones I had loved to listen to. In my humble opinion not every album needs remastering and this one didn't. Three stars are solely for remastered songs.

I grew up listening to this album as an LP, and while it eventually ended up retired to a quiet corner of the house after my family's turntable died, the music was never forgotten. So I was understandably thrilled to stumble on this CD. Finally! The opportunity to bring Nitty Gritty Dirt Band back into play! There are so many great music roots embedded in the songs---bluegrass, reggae, gospel, honky-tonk, classical, even a 1920s dance tune---and yet the band never loses its distinctive 60s and 70s folk flavor. I love just about every song on this album, but I'm particularly delighted to rediscover "Collegiana," "Mr. Bojangles," "Ripplin' Waters," and "The Battle of New Orleans."
