Preface

Preface to the Third Edition

The purpose of this edition, like that of the previous two editions, is to provide a compact, useful, and affordable collection of the most frequently used acronyms and abbreviations in medicine and the health care professions. As in previous editions, the goal was not to be comprehensive but rather to focus on acronyms and abbreviations that occur with reasonable frequency in the health care literature.

Approximately 5,000 entries have been added to reflect new material related to burgeoning fields such as health care management, long-term care, outcomes research, medical informatics, molecular biology, and outpatient care, to name just a few. The symbol section in the front of the book has also been expanded and now includes genetic symbols as well as the Greek alphabet.

We welcome feedback and suggestions from readers, which can be sent to me in care of the publisher, Hanley & Belfus in Philadelphia. I hope you find this new edition user friendly and helpful.
