While working for a non-profit I wrote a VISTA grant that brought me in contact with five very bright and wonderful Type-A young people. When they heard me lamenting that I had come to the end of the Odd Thomas series, until another is written, they all recommended Dexter. They told me he was like Odd but with a twist. Oh dear, what a twist he has.
If anyone had told me I would read a book about a serial killer, root for him, laugh at him and stay up late finishing the book, I would have thought that person to be as insane as Dexter.
Dexter actually works in the Miami PD Crime Lab as a blood spatter expert, oh yeah, is he ever. There are more crazy characters in all of these books including his "sister" from the foster family that raised him, police department denizens, a girlfriend that is a half-a-bubble off level, her two kids who are future serial killers in the making and the assortment of child molesters that Dexter dispatches via vivisection in each book while tracking down other killers. Dexter has no respect whatsoever for killers who do not clean up their crime scenes.
These books are pure escapist fare, but loads of fun. They are well written. One of the premium television channels has made a series out of them, but since I have not had a television hook up in my house since 1998, I will have to wait until they put them on DVD to see those. I might also add, they are not for the squeamish.

The first book was okay...but this one was so much better! The first book was kinda difficult to get through, leading me to think I might not enjoy the series bc of the fact that I had already watched all five seasons of the show before reading the books. But the second book completely changed my mind. This book kept me in suspense, excited to find out what would happen next. I can't wait to read the next five books in the series!!!

I love the Dexter series, they are so easy to read! They're fun to read and bring you a total escape. This one is very slow to get going, but really good once you get to the middle.

I didn't like it as much as the first book. But maybe that's because not much was added to the overall plot. It was completely drug out...almost like it just kept going and going and going....booooring. I expected more of a story about Doakes as well. It was kinda predictable at times. I did like it, but it was just too similar to the first book. I am hoping the 3rd book goes in a different direction because I can't take much more of the same stuff.

Dexter is a whole new kind of serial killer. One can't help but like him and his dark charm. Even though he kills, he only kills those who harm or murder others. In this way, he doesn't seem to be such a bad guy. The way he thinks and talks are so different then anyone else. His dark humor and twisted morals draw people in. Through this book, the reader can enjoy the morbid fun that is Dexter.

I have read all three of the dexter book s and I also love the show. I can't wait to see what Jeff writes next. The story about Dexter and his life show how similar it is to anyone else in the world, trying to fit in and deal with the world around us. I hope therwe will be another book.

Miami-Dade police forensics lab blood spatter analyst Dexter ¿the Avenger¿ Morgan obsesses in euphoria when he slices and dices a person, but he also is selective in who he carves up choosing the dregs of society, and psychopaths especially serial killers. He recently notched number forty, homicidal pedophile photographer Steve Reiker and eagerly awaits his next victim..................... A serial slicer Danco apparently leisurely over a few weeks surgically removes extremities from his victims who he keeps alive as he slowly mutilates them one body part at a time. When a still alive Salvadoran Manuel Borges is found, he has no body part hanging off his torso the medical examiner estates he underwent at least a month of torture as some of the slits left by the carved off body part healed. Dexter admires this newcomer to the slice and dice game, but also decides to stop this rival although some DC outsider Kyle Chutsky claims lead until he is abducted and loses a finger with more to follow. Now Dexter goes hunting to find the killer....................... As with DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER is a wild macabre perhaps insane South Florida police procedural starring a psychopathic hero who enjoys the finer things in life, eviscerating serial killers. How crazy Dexter is comes out loud clear when unlike his peers and his adversary in the police department who are horrified by Danco¿s work, the Avenger recognizes a fellow artisan albeit one that he must stop. Readers expecting a High Noon showdown between two professional slashers will enjoy the duel when it occurs but will wait for quite a while as Dexter the sleuth investigates................... The second book in the Dexter series is where the fork in the road is hit and all similarities between the book and the show cease to exist. In this novel we find Dexter under constant surveillance by his good "friend" sergeant Doakes, which puts a serious damper on his extracurricular activities. However, just as you think the dastardly demonic Dexter is done a new killer comes to town that shares a connection with Doakes' past. The only person devious enough to find the new villain is our favorite serial killer: Dexter Morgan. I enjoyed this novel better than the first and have already started book 3. I highly recommend this book to fans who pay homage to the art form known as the black comedy.

This book is much better than the first. It has just the right amount of 'humor', mystery, detecting, character development and 'justice' to keep you turning the pages.I haven't seen the TV show so I don't know if this runs parallel to that storyline or not, but it's completely engaging and difficult to put down. There are a handful of alliterations in this book (but not nearly as many as there were in the first) but they actually come across as apropos. For some reason I don't think I should give this five stars, but I can't think of a reason to justify not giving it the full five - it's engaging, funny, non-moralistic... perhaps the mystery is a bit simple, but still...

Not as good as the first, but enjoyable.

I think to me this book was more ¿intense¿ than the first just because crazy limb-chopping Dr. Danco had Deb¿s boyfriend and for a while the reader doesn¿t really know exactly what will happen to him. (And also you don¿t know who will be next and how this guy will be stopped) And once again Dexter himself is a brilliant and likable character and his patience is tested because a certain suspicious sergeant keeps watch over him much too often and Dexter can¿t ¿do his job¿. Unpredictable and very entertaining.

Love this! How rare to find something unlike anything else I have ever read. Simple premise - the hero's a serial killer. And do it in first person. Would love to meet this Jeff Lindsay guy; he's *ing dark comic genius...and as such I wonder if he would be amused to know the local B&N has him shelved in literary fiction? Hmm. Although I can sympathise; it's probably a rare enough day when something so unique comes across their loading dock. All the reviewers have said this already, but it's impossible not to love this guy (the character). You find yourself wondering if it's nothing more than a little mild autism, if he'll somehow be jarred into more-normal emotions...his constant, self-effacing reminders that he's only a fake human are oddly touching.OK, I loved the creepiness too. The bad guy is sooooo bad, he makes Dexter look like Santa Claus. And yet there aren't those many-paged scenes of bloodletting that can put you to sleep in other novels. In this case the dollop was just right. (I decided not to let my 14 year old read this, however; it's disturbing.)In retrospect I should have read the first book first, but I went out and got it today; usually I try not to read too much of one author in a row, but in this case I'm making an exception.Go, Dex!!!

Dexter Morgan is a self described "inhuman monster", a man who cannot feel emotion and who is compelled to kill by the "dark passenger" in his mind. The catch in this unique story is that Dexter's problem was discovered by his police officer stepfather, who set down rules for Dexter - he can only kill bad people, those who prey on the sick or the weak. So by day Dexter works as a forensic specialist for the police department and at night he hunts predators. In this book, Dexter and his sister (a cop for the Miami PD) are trying to track down a Central American refugee who is butchering former army colleagues. Dexter is struck by both anger and admiration for the killer. Lindsay's writing is a mix of dark humor and standard police procedural. The side story of Dexter's personal relationship with a divorced"human" woman and her children is amusing and touching. The character of Dexter is so fascinating and unique that it lifts the story from the ranksof a mundane to something special.

Dexter has simply become my favorite sociopath. This installment in the Dexter saga has much more suspense and action than the first book while still retaining Dexter's trademark dark humor and razor-sharp irony.

A dark, quick read, but not as enjoyable as Darkly Dreaming Dexter or Dexter in the Dark. Still worth reading, and entertaining for all that. Lindsay's Dexter Morgan is a sociopath with ethics, which makes for interesting moral choices.

Started this one over the weekend at the same time that I finished watching season II on DVD. I love this show - it just gets better. I love the view from the book which is directly inside Dexter's head and then the show as it adds in all of the great characters. I was really disappointed to lose Doakes in the show - I'm wondering if he stays resident in the book.

I have come to the conclusion that Jeff Lindsay is one sick puppy. I don't know what that means about me, since I love his series of Dexter books, Dexter the lovable serial killer. It doesn't help that when I read his book, the voice I hear in my head is the same as on the Showtime Original Series and I keep seeing that cuties face. This installment has Dexter being followed by Sergeant Doakes, which has lead Dexter to having to assume a 'normal' life, in danger of becoming 'the world's first serial killing couch potato.' He is saved from moving from Dexter Derailed to Dexter Demented by the fact that as he says, this is Miami, and a bigger badder inhuman monster shows up. It's a case that involves his sister who enlists Dexter's help to hunt down the killer, but can he do it without becoming his next victim?Jeff Lindsay keeps the tone light-hearted with his witty patter and clever use of alliteration: Debonair Dexter, Dipsophobic Dexter, Daytime Dexter and my personal favorite Delicate Dimpled Dexter. This is a quick and enjoyable read. Pure entertainment. I recommend this book.

Gotta love Dexter! I just watched the 1st season of the TV series, too -- I love this reading and watching -- I feel like I'm never without Dexter...

I love Dexter's narrative voice in this series. The bad guy in this book is especially heinous, and I was surprised at how far Lindsay was willing to go with some of his main characters. I really look forward to the next book! Dexter has some interesting changes coming in his life.

As with the first one I'd seen the television series before I'd read the book but thankfully, once again, it was different than the programme and left me wanting more.Jeff Lindsay has a real talent for making two totally different characters appear to be the same person as well as leading you down the wrong path then smacking you in the face with truth!Very much worth a read.

Not as good as the debut of the series, but still suitable as mind candy. Spent a little too much time with remarks about how badly Dexter wanted to be out and about with his "Dark Passenger" and how much it stressed him to do good things for people instead of be out killing bad guys.I would never buy these books but I'm happy I can find them at the library.

Dexter¿s back and this time his chase to catch a child molester is halted by the ever watching Sergeant Doakes lurking in the shadows. Dexter¿s world is suddenly spun upside down when a new killer emerges that even surprises Dexter at how horrific a mess he left. Dexter has to deal with the accidental proposal to his girlfriend, Rita, on top of all this. Dexter is cooping with the day-to-day life of hide and seek with Sergeant Doakes when they both realize that this killer is someone darker than they could have imagined. Two books in and I still love these books. This one is a little bit more intense than the first one, but in achieving that, it falls a little bit short of originality. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but there wasn¿t anything new other than the story. Still the story was a thrill ride in itself. So many things were working against Dexter and yet he still comes out on top. The ending was also pretty mind-blowing. I think this book deserves a four and a half out of five stars.

Recently I, along with a few friends, took an eight hour drive to a friends wedding. Although the city is a state capitol, I was surprised at how little there was to do. As you can imagine, the eight hour trip provided many memories for the group that I traveled with, but the destination was less than satisfying. This second novel, an improvement on the first in the Dexter series, is much like this trip. The ending left quite a bit to be desired, but I enjoyed the ride.

The 2nd book in the Dexter series goes in a completely opposite direction than the television series - which was refreshing. I enjoyed the 2nd book a bit more than the first - the antagonist seemed a little more threatening to Dexter than that of the 1st. Add half a star to the 4 stars I have listed up there.

The second book in the Dexter series. This time Dexter is being watched by Sergeant Doakes and he has to lay low so as not to attract attention to himself. I found this a little annoying at times, sitting on the couch drinking beer and acting normal is not what Dexter is about, there's nothing thrilling about that so the first part was a little slow due to this. It soon picks up though and Dexter's true character comes out once again to hunt yet another serial killer.Lindsay got quite creative with this monster and what he does to his victims is utterly horrible, but you can count on Dexter and his Dark Passenger to get to the bottom of it. He also explores more characters in this book and shows another side of Dexter's tough sister Deborah, which really irritated me sometimes. Of course Dexter's wit and insight on normal human beings as he's pushed into the family life makes the book highly entertaining.Although not as edgy and well written as the first book it is still an enjoyable read. The strange thing is that whatever happens you still find yourself on Dexter's side, which is a serial killer himself.
