The night was dark and tranquil as Denae slid against an oak and waited for her partner, Matt, to catch up. They had jumped from a slow-moving van under the cover of darkness two nights earlier.
While she had only her knife—and two more no one knew about—Matt had been given a Glock. He had tried to keep it hidden, but Denae had seen it just the same.
An owl hooted nearby and crickets sang loudly in the stillness. Wind rustled the leaves as it swept through the branches of the trees. The moon played peekaboo with dense clouds that moved like dark giants swiftly across the sky.
A perfect night for spying.
“What are you waiting for?” Matt whispered irritably as he moved around her and took the lead.
Denae adjusted the pack on her back and watched Matt through her night-vision goggles. He was such a prick. Not once in all her time at MI5 had she questioned orders. But she found herself doing so now.
MI5 protected the UK, its citizens, and its interests on its own soil as well as overseas, against threats to national security. Denae had done her research on Dreagan Industries, as she did with any target she was given. Dreagan had been making whisky for as long as there were records, and besides the fact that the file was anorexic, there was nothing about Dreagan that would prompt MI5 to take a closer look.
Yet here she was.
It made sense with her photographic memory that they would send her with Matt, but … there was more going on. Spies rarely trusted anyone—especially other spies.
There were factions within divisions of MI5 that were kept secret, or as secret as it could be in a building full of spooks. That wasn’t what was disturbing. It was the fact that there was a deeper Black Ops level section she had only caught whispers of after being put on this mission that sent her mind into overdrive.
Denae had become paranoid and suspicious once she learned it was that secret division that gave the order to infiltrate Dreagan. She became even more suspicious after she found two bugs in her flat as well as a tracking device on her car.
Even so, opting out of the mission wasn’t a possibility. So here she was, in the dead of night with a partner she couldn’t stand.
Denae kept low and followed Matt through the thick underbrush of ferns. Ever since she had crossed the border onto Dreagan land she’d had an odd feeling prickling the back of her neck. Almost as if they had broken more than just the law by trespassing.
And it left her on edge and tense.
Not a good mix with her suspicions—and her dislike of Matt the Prick.
There were consequences for breaking rules. What would be the price if they were caught? Then again, they were MI5 agents. They wouldn’t get caught.
She and Matt had a few hours to reach the spot designated on the GPS she carried. In two days they had crossed just over twenty thousand acres. They moved quickly and quietly, resting sparingly.
“How close, Lacroix?” Matt asked once she reached him.
He didn’t wait for her to answer before he rushed to the next tree. Denae ran by him without stopping. Matt had never particularly warmed to her, and though she had worked with him before without incident, he hadn’t been happy when she was assigned to this mission.
Matt had voiced his displeasure loud and clear for the entire department to hear. Denae hadn’t cared—at least outwardly she had portrayed that sentiment. What she did care about was that it was just the two of them. More teams should have been sent to different parts of Dreagan’s border to make sure nothing was missed. There were so many mistakes being made that she couldn’t help but wonder why Dreagan was a target.
Her apprehension kicked up a notch. Vague statements of “You’ll know what it is we’re searching for when you see it,” combined with the clandestine faction giving the order, mingled with nonexistent proof that anyone at Dreagan was doing anything wrong made her anxious and tense.
Denae bit back a grunt when Matt spitefully slammed into her shoulder. She cut him a look. “Three clicks,” she bit out.
Matt was the golden boy of MI5. She had earned her position after years of hard work, but Matt had climbed the ranks easily—too easily. Her annoyance was also due to the fact Matt had been given private orders beyond the ones they had been given together. And it left her with a weight in her stomach.
When MI5 became secretive with their agents, people died. Was that what this was about? Had Matt been dispatched to assassinate someone? Denae hadn’t gotten that order, and though she loved her work, the only time she had taken a life was in self-defense.
She paused at the threshold of the thick forest, which protected them as the trees turned to a sea of grass that stretched endlessly from one end of the valley to another and majestic mountains rose up on either side.
Denae took the lead since she had the GPS device. She kept as close to the mountain as she could, her eyes darting around, waiting for an attack she felt was imminent.
Frank, her superior, stated the people of Dreagan were dangerous, but she had been given no specifics on how they could be. Nor had her look into Dreagan shown anything.
Frank had said Dreagan and its people were private because they were hiding something. What exactly that was she hadn’t been told either. She was just supposed to know it when she saw it.
Denae glanced over her shoulder as she ran. Had Matt been told? Did he know what made the people of Dreagan—all of them—so important that MI5 was sent?
Her musing was cut short when they approached the designated spot. Denae slowed to a walk and pointed to the pool of water that rippled as a gust of wind blew past. “That’s it.”
“Good,” Matt said and jerked off his night-vision goggles before shrugging out of his pack.
Denae did the same and stepped out of her black utility pants and removed her black jacket. Beneath, she wore a solid black wetsuit. She had just taken out the small tank, mask, and fins when Matt stared at her with an unreadable look.
She felt his censoring gaze and slowly counted to ten. “I know you don’t like me, but get over it. And remember the feeling is more than mutual.”
“I understood your use when you were undercover at the universities, but I can’t believe they sent you on this important mission.”
“Why? Am I not good enough?” she asked as she put on her fins.
He was silent for several seconds. “You do well enough, I suppose.”
Denae frowned and looked at him. “Wow. I guess that’s as close to a compliment as I’ll get from you.”
“You should’ve stayed in America and joined the CIA or FBI instead of being lured to MI5. There are others with photographic memories.”
“So, it’s because I’m American.”
“You’ll regret ever joining MI5,” he said cryptically and jumped into the water.
It wasn’t the first time a colleague had made mention of her being American, but none had ever come close to threatening her as Matt just had. She would prove that she was put on this mission because she deserved it.
Denae slipped the tank onto her back, fit the mask over her face, and put the regulator into her mouth before she plunged into the deep pool. Thanks to the weights on her belt, she sank quickly.
Swimming had always come easy, and she used her skill and speed to cut through the water. Small lights on either side of their masks lit the way through the pitch-black water.
Huge rocks jutted from the floor beneath. The closer they got to the mountain, the thicker the boulders became until they were weaving through them.
Denae effortlessly caught up to Matt. She was swimming past him when he reached out and pulled her regulator out of her mouth. With a twist of her body, she turned to see what he was about when she spotted the knife in his hand.
In an instant, he cut the straps to her tank. It fell out of sight into the water below before she could grab it. Denae immediately went on the defensive. She kicked out her foot and hit him squarely in the chin.
Matt jerked backward, giving her enough time to turn and slip through the narrow slit where water gushed from the mountain to fill the pool.
Her lungs burned. She focused on cutting through the water as fluidly as a fish, just as her father had taught her. The retort of the gun was loud in the water. Denae turned her head and saw Matt firing his Glock, the bullets narrowly missing her. She had to get on land and gain the upper hand.
Twice she nearly bumped into rocks. She spent the precious few seconds and bent her leg to her chest, where she pulled out a glow stick stashed in a pocket on her leg and cracked it.
Bright green light flared. Denae let out a few bubbles of air and started swimming. There was no doubt Matt had tried to kill her. Since she didn’t know how long the tunnel was before it opened up inside the mountain, he could very well get his wish.
Death by drowning. She should’ve expected as much since it was how her sister died.
Denae refused to think about Renee and that life-altering day as she kicked harder with her legs. Matt was still behind her, and if she was going to come out of this with any chance at living, she had to reach the surface before he did.
With the water so dark, she wouldn’t know when the tunnel opened up without feeling it. Denae moved as close to the top of the tunnel as she could. The water rushing the other way made her progression slower—and her body shake from the need for air.
Denae squeezed her eyes closed for a second to focus. When she opened them, she powered forward even as she caught a glimpse of Matt’s mask lights cutting through the water.
She let out another few bubbles of air and wondered if this was how Renee had felt when she drowned. It had been years since Denae had thought of that fateful day that changed her family’s life forever—and guilt remained her constant companion.
With her thoughts churning, it took her a moment to realize the roof of the tunnel was no longer above her. Denae pointed the glow stick upward and saw only water.
She kicked hard and propelled herself up. When she broke the surface, she gasped in air before she sank beneath the water again. Denae wasted no time swimming to the edge. She tossed the glow stick onto the floor of the cave and quickly jumped out of the water.
Matt was right behind her before she had time to kick off both her fins. His, she noticed as he stood glaring, had been removed in the water. They circled each other around the glow stick while she managed to kick off the last fin.
Matt’s smile was sinister as he shrugged off his tank. “I should’ve known you’d be a fast swimmer.”
“Was it always your plan to kill me in the water?”
“Not kill you, Denae, just wound you.”
She frowned. “Wound me. Why? So you get all the glory of this mission?”
“You are a stupid one.”
“Enlighten me then, or get on with the fight.”
Matt lunged, the knife in his hand aimed for her leg. Denae blocked his thrust with the side of her arm and punched him in the jaw with her other fist.
He spun and thrust his foot out, trying to trip her, but she jumped and kicked, landing a foot directly in his chest.
“You’re bait,” he said with a sneer as he stumbled a few steps back.
A fission of dread made her heart skip a beat. Bait. There was only one reason for bait, and it never ended well. “Since I’m such an idiot, explain it to me.”
The excitement in Matt’s eyes said it all. “Your mission in all of this was to die so we could reveal just who those at Dreagan really are.”
Just as she expected. “You’ll wound me because you suspect those at Dreagan will kill me once they discover me.”
“Something like that,” Matt said with a snort of laughter. “We need to catch those at Dreagan. Your death will ensure that. Those here at Dreagan will never know they killed an MI5 agent.”
“But my death will give MI5 the reason to investigate Dreagan,” she finished.
Denae was appalled. Not just because they wanted to kill her—and “they” meaning everyone in her division had planned this—but because those at Dreagan were being set up.
There was no need for her to reply. Matt had his mission, but Denae wasn’t going to go down easily. She feinted with a left jab and kicked Matt against the side of his head with her right foot.
He hissed and lunged for her again. This time she wasn’t able to block him and felt the sting of pain as the blade slid through her wetsuit and into her skin on her left side.
Denae hit Matt’s arm, which held the blade, so it pulled the weapon out of her. She then elbowed him in the throat as she was turning. He landed a foot at the back of her knee sending her to the ground.
She tucked and rolled, and when she came to her feet, she had her knife in her hand. No one liked to spar with her when it came to knives because she was so good. Now that she had her weapon, she had a chance.
“Know your death will free the world,” Matt said as he attacked once more.

' I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley ' Denae is an MI5 Agent. She is sent to Draegan on a mission that she isn't sure about with a partner that she does not trust. With good reason, her partner attacks her to use her for bait. Bait for what? She doesn't know but Denae will not take the attack lying down. It ends up being kill or be killed. She is seriously injured in the fight and passes out. When she wakes up she is in a room in Draegan Manor surrounded by big sexy men. Only one of them seems to hold her interest though and he just happens to be the one that can't seem to stand her. She tells them everything she knows about the mission in exchange for her life along with a new identity and location. She doesn't believe that they are going to do anything but kill her, she knows too much. Denae is in for quite a ride finding out that there are dragon shifters, Dark and Light Fae. Kellan has been sleeping in Dragon form for about thirteen hundred years and does not want to be disturbed. That is exactly what happens when the two humans show up in his cave. He hates humans, but the female intrigues him. When the female is injured and he takes her to the Manor he can't think of anything else but going back to his cave and going back to sleep. The more time he spends with Denae, the more he wants her and he does not want to want her. When the two of them get taken by the Dark Fae, Kellan vows to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. When things start to seem like he will not be able to keep his promise, he is devastated but he has to keep it together to be there for Denae, because she will need him when dealing with the Dark Fae. My opinion: I absolutely LOVED this book! I don't know how I didn't know of this author before but she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I am definitely going to be reading more of her books. Dragon shifter books are a favorite of mine, and I was hooked right from the beginning of this book. I love all the characters in this book with the exception of maybe Con. So far he is a bit of a jerk. I love that both Kellan and Denae have a lesson to learn. And the love scene, so yummy! I am going to read more of this series for sure! I highly recommend reading!! I've loved every book written by this author, but this book is definitely one of her best. Anxiously waiting for the next one in this series
Kellan and Denea's story is entertaining and enjoyable. Donna Grant's new spin off series The Dragon Kings picks up where her Dark Warriors leave off. She doesn't disappoint in her story telling of dragons, fae, and warriors. Loved it and can't wait for the next book.
4.5 Stars Darkest Flame is another steamy love story from Donna Grant. I can’t get enough of these sexy dragon kings! The dragon kings are men that are half human and half dragon, sworn to protect the human world. After a devastating war between the humans and dragons, the dragon kings were put under a magic spell to protect them from having any human emotions (especially love). But as hundreds of years have passed some of the dragon kings feel the loneliness their isolation has caused. Now each men are re-discovering their human emotions and are searching for their soul mate. Darkest Flame is the first full-length story of the series. Dragon king Kellan has been asleep for twelve hundred years, his solution to avoid the human species that he has grown to hate. Denae Lacroix is a MI5 agent whose mission is to spy on the dragon king’s land. When Denae is betrayed by her people she is thrust into the world of the dragon kings and the arms of Kellan. Right away there is chemistry, but not the obvious sexual attraction. It is more of a love-hate connection. The tension between the two adds drama to the story but there were times I felt the story dragged. Kellan has had a deep hatred for humans which Denae is aware of. So her insecurities are warranted but it being mentioned repeatedly made me dislike Denae at times. But once that passes the story is great – there is so much action and suspense, I really got drawn into the story. I do recommend reading the novellas, Dark Heat, since those characters appear in this book. Also it would be good so you understand how the series begins. There was also a cross-over of characters from the Dark Warriors series, which I have not read yet. But the author does a great job to give enough of a background to familiarize the readers with these characters, and without losing sight of the main plot. After meeting these characters I definitely want to start that series! Darkest Flame is a great story and I can’t wait to read more from this series! I recommend this book to all fans of shifters and paranormal romance.
ARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Darkest Flame is one steamy paranormal romance. Dragons have never been so alluring, throw in the Fae, and a secret spy agency, MI5. What more could you ask for? Denae Lacroix is an American MI5 agent. She is sent on a dangerous mission to gather information on Dreagan Industries based in the Scottish Highlands. Denae's mission quickly turns deadly. Kellan has been asleep for centuries. Disturbing a sleeping dragon can be dangerous! Denae will soon find out how dangerous. Can she trust the mysterious man that comes to her rescue? Denae is a well trained agent that won't stop till the job is done. Kellan is a Dragon King. He has used his strength and integrity to protect dragons and humans alike. Denae and Kellan have sizzling chemistry. I thought the characters and plot were well written. My only problem with this story was that there were continued references to things that happened in the past that weren't fully explained. Despite this confusion, I really enjoyed this book and plan to continue this series.
your average romance...only with dragons. points for originality.
Enjoyed so much.. a good read you you can sink your teeth into
I was a little lost in the beginning with the references to events that happened previously in the timeline (I'm assuming a different series) but eventually to story became it own adventure and was a great one! I am ready for more!
Good plot, good series development, and fantastic steam! Also, exponential villan expansion it will be interesting to see where we go from here. Thank you!!
This story reads like it was written by someone in middle school rushing through a homework assignment. For instance, the numerous characters have no defined 'voice.' If, after reading say 5 chapters, you took out every name of the character that was mentioned up to that point, and erased it, you'd never guess who was talking, or thinking. Nothing about them would lead you to think 'oh, so and so it talking now." There is no real character development either. Just trying in "I hate all humans," 800 times and then over time the author pauses mid thought on this doesn't count as development. He likes 1 human he can bang that doesn't mean he has given up his prejudice view point. Any time there was an opportunity to dive in and have a real heart to heart and actually have development happen, the author throws in a new character, a new adventure, a new story line, or just an attack scene. There were 3 sex scenes in this book. The first is to avoid finishing a fight. The second is when they are supposed to be escaping not screwing. And the third is to avoid talking about their feelings like adults. The whole book is just a thrown together mess that I honestly hope was written by a ghost writer who just didn't know what a connecting sentence was.
A great start to a New Series. I stumbled across this series by reading book 11 first and liked it so much that I decided to read the series from the beginning. I liked the storyline and the characters, there was plenty of sexual tension between Denae and Kellan, lots of action and mystery. It seems to me that this series is a spin off from the Dark Warrior series since there appears to be some cross over references, so I will be looking into getting my hands on them as well. I am always happy when I stumble across a good read in the paranormal genre. Very entertaining with hot dragons and strong female heroines.
Took a chance on something new and was worth it.
Love the story and the characters.
4 1/2 stars! I really enjoyed the novellas that started this series so I was excited to get to read this one. Certainly wasn't disappointed! Kellan has some issues. He's a dragon king that has been sleeping for centuries. The presence of man in this realm has caused some problems that he just can't get past. In his grief for his bronze dragons and the betrayal of a human, he finds endless sleep easier to deal with. That's all interrupted when an MI5 mission lands Denae and her partner Matt in his cave. Denae is a highly skilled operative but her partner Matt sneers at her seeing her as less than him. That sneer may have been wiped off his face as he faced Denae with a knife in her hand. Yeah, I was pleased she put that boy in his place. And she needs to be strong to get through what's facing her. Wounded and betrayed by her employer, she needs to figure out how to get out of this mess alive. I loved that Denae is one strong women. Kellan under estimates her a few times but he learns. And if anyone can melt his angry heart, it's her. These two are great together. Kellan thinks to protect her. She doesn't get why she can't stand up to Fae magic on her own. Both are stubborn and willful. They are perfect for each other. I do love Kellan. He knows from the beginning what Denae is to him but he refuses to even think the thought. Tough and emotionally scarred, he needs to work through some issues. Denae does a good job of surprising him. Humans aren't all what he believed they were. Together these two are combustible. Definitely yummy. The questions grow as it becomes clear that the dark Fae are part of those targeting the Kings. But who is behind it? We still don't know but things continue to get more and more interesting. There was some infighting between the kings in this one. Con tries to protect his Dragon Kings but it's not clear who the real threat is. The writing is good, the characters well developed, and I want to read more! This is good paranormal!

Mention i made of characters from previous offerings is recommend, but not an absolute necessity. You will be able to follow and understand the references made in Darkest Flame. Filled with Strongly defined characters with solid backgrounds. Betrayal has Denae questioning everything she believes. Having to protect her has Kellan reassessing his beliefs about humans. For the whole the book flows smoothly and at a quick pace. For a first book it dies a good job in setting the series up including characters that will reoccur in future books in the series. My rating of "Darkest Flame - Book 1" is 4.5 out of 5 stars.
So I think I found a new paranormal romance series to binge. That first book always sets the tone and I think Darkest Flame did a great job of introducing the world. Now, there IS a book prior to this that is a collection of three shorter works detailing some of the Dragon Kings that appear in this book. I definitely think reading it beforehand will help but it’s not a necessity. Now… this book wasn’t perfect. Few very are. And it was a bit formulaic for the genre but it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Denae and Kellan kind of had an enemies-to-lovers thing going on which I always love. She’s a MI5 agent and he’s a Dragon King so that was an interesting combo but I liked that she was a strong character but not over the top. Denae couldn’t do everything but she could hold her own and didn’t back down in a fight. Kellan took a while to grow on me with his constant “humans suck” mentality when it was clear that he didn’t truly believe that anymore. But they had a decent romance. Most of it was banter so I’m hoping for a bit more depth shown, perhaps, in later books, but for this one it was enjoyable. Darkest Flame doesn’t stick to just their points-of-view, though, bouncing between the other Dragon Kings as well. I was surprised there were more of other characters compared to the lead of the next book, which is Tristan, but the added perspectives definitely had me needing more. I never really figured out WHAT the Dragon Kings are from this book because there were dragons mentioned in some alternate dimension but these guys are more dragon shifters? But, I mean, I rolled with it because DRAGONS. Honestly, this book reminded me a LOT of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward (if you’re a fan of those) except this read much quicker (which is a good thing, in my mind at least). There’s definitely a strong world-building focus and I didn’t realize until after that this is actually book #15 in this world (following Grant’s Dark Swords and Dark Warriors series). It’s also established that there are Fae in this world, as well as this Warrior race that’s still vague and Druids. So, a lot, and now I’m really curious and totally going to try out the other series after I get through these books because I’m pretty much hooked already. More of a side note but I’m going to want a book for Rhi. You’ll meet her. She’s pretty awesome. She kicks butts and takes names all with a great manicure (but really, her love of nail polish is kind of insane). Reminded me a lot of Lindsey from the Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill (though it took me forever to make that connection XD). All in all, I’m hooked. Already have book 2 waiting to be read and excited to binge all the books out so far (which is a lot). Perfect series for paranormal romance readers looking to shake things up from the usual vamps and werewolves.
I am rereading this series and I am still finding clues that I've overlooked the first time around!!
I was so excited when this book came out! Kellan is quite the stubborn harda$$, Then again, this does seem to be a pattern for our amazingly sexi Dragon Kings. I loved the banter back and forth between Danae and Kellan. Don’t get me wrong, danae is a force to be reckoned with haha! When I realized that Con knew about Tristan I was so angry at Con that I could spit! I mean, I had my sneaking suspicions, that there was more to Tristan then we were being told, but the fact that Con knew made me so angry… grrr… I will admit I was a bit more than disappointed when Danae’s blood test came back. But she and Kellan are so amazing together that I was quickly all better. I was giddy that we actually got to see an actual mating ceremony in detail! I had been waiting for that since Dark Craving so YAY!! Awesome book, I can’t wait to JUMP into the next one! I give this book 5 out of 5 shields!

Okay, so this is officially the fist book I've read from Donna Grant. Gasp, I KNOW!!! And what a way to start!!! Kickass heroine who is independent and literally kicking ass from the very beginning! Throughout the book the females are strong and independent yet, still have the vulnerability needed for you to like them! "Darkest Flame" is the first book in the Dark Kings series, however, there are three (technically four if you count the bonus material in the box set) prequel novellas. With this said.... do you have to read the novellas to read "Darkest Flame"? Well, technically no! The book can be read as a stand alone book. However, I'm sure you'll get curious as how the mated couples came about so you'll end up clicking this link here to read more about them as I did.. Oh and let me know if, like me, you're about to hit the "One-Click"/buy button. Back to "Darkest Flame"... Donna has created a mythical and unique world where dragons once ruled the land and sky but now no longer can. While I love the traditional shifter world (wolves, panthers, cheetahs, etc.), I'm extremely glad that Dragons are now being added to this genre. A breathe of fresh air!! I mentioned at the beginning that the heroine is smart, independent and can kick ass. Denae works MI5 ( and just in case you don't know what MI5 is.... The Security Service, commonly known as MI5 (Military Intelligence, Section 5), is the United Kingdom's domestic counter-intelligence and security agency and is part of its intelligence machinery alongside the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS; also known as MI6) focused on foreign threats, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and Defence Intelligence (DI). All come under the direction of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). More here)). Sent on a mission with little to now details or information as to why, she does any good soldier does and follows orders. However, things do not go as plan and the truth begins to unveil before her. The hero is hot... you did see the cover right? He has a deep rooted hate for humans and his reasons are valid ones. I can't take that away from him. That being said... you sort of want to smack in across the head for lumping all humans in the same category. Thankfully, he wises up. He fights against the connection he has with Denae and we all know where that can lead. He is also determined, loyal and will stand up for what's right. You definitely root for him and the Dragon Kings. There is an enemy that everyone is trying to figure out who he is. The Dragon Kings seem to believe they know who it is, yet, I'm wondering if Donna has not other plans laid out for us, readers. It will be interesting to see where this all leads. I feel in love with a character that is currently a secondary one, but I'm hoping will get her story told. Rhi is a Light Fae and seems to have an "interesting" hate towards one particular Dragon King. That's not the reason I fell for her. She's sassy and sarcastic and keeps up with the bad attitude of the Dragon Kings. She's a blast! Love her!! Again, hoping her story will be told. Overall, I fell for this series. I couldn't put it down and when I did have to, I wanted to run home to finish reading it. Oh and I jumped right into reading book two!!
Love her stories! Please keep on writing them!
Love all her books.
