Ever heard the one about a mage, a Carpathian warrior, a book of evil, and the love of a lifetime? Dark Illusion is such a delicious story and I can't wait for you to meet Isai and Julija! Isai's an honorable man who has spent centuries looking for his lifemate while defeating the forces of evil. He's handsome, honest, considerate, fierce, loyal, intelligent, strong, fearless and genuine. I cannot adequately describe the many ways I loved this hero. He was unreal! His patience with Julija knew no limits, which thankfully came in handy because she tested mine. He would divide his attention, risk his life, even his soul for her. He might think he was wholly dark, but he had honor. Integrity. He was a man who walked in light even when he didn't see it around him. - Julija Julija was a little hard to connect to at first, but in the end I adored her too! She came from a family of evil and yet she retained her light. While trying to save an entire race by destroying an evil book of spells, her family is hunting her down. Are they trying to kill her or do they want to recapture their pet? Her abusive ex, an extremely powerful mage, is also out there hunting for her, wanting her back in his control. However, Julija has much more power than even she expected and with the faith, love and guidance of Isai, she just might come into her own. After living a life ruled by fear and doubt, Isai has encouragd her to take charge, find her confidence, and to truly believe in herself. I'm in love with this man!! Have I tempted you yet? If you love your paranormal romance full of action, incredible world building, impossible to resist characters, and yummy steaminess, then you definitely won't want to miss out on this book!

This book is another in the Dark Series. It can be read as a standalone, but it helps to have the backstory contained in the previous novels. This is the story of Isai and Julija. Like all the Dark Series novels the males are over the top alphas, as are all Carpathian ancients. But Julija was raised in an abusive family who used her because she was part Carpathian as well as part mage, with a hint of Dragonseeker thrown in......got all that? Because of her early abuse she is not sure she can be what a dominating ancient needs in a lifemate, and neither does Isai. But Julija is on a quest to find a very dangerous book, and Isai is very instrumental in finding the location and destruction of said book. Can they work out their differences, find and destroy the book and find their happily ever after? You'll have to read the book to find out.... Christine Feehan is one of my favorite authors, I read all her series and have been known to squeal in delight when I see she is releasing another book. I can't wait for the next one!! Thanks Christine for all the great reading!! Thank you also to the publisher and NetGalley for choosing to have me read this book early and give my opinion.

I will admit I have missed a few stories in this series but it's like I missed nothing. I have loved this authors stories in the Carpathian world and this book reminds me why. Julija comes from a long line of evil mages namely Xavier. Although a master of Illusion herself she isn't quite as evil as her lineage. We get many facets and beings in this story. Loved the chemistry between Isai and Julija. And I do hope Elisbeta gets a story. A fantastic part of the series and I highly recommend it.

My review of DARK ILLUSIO: Dark Illusion was a wonderful read. Great storyline, and action pack! I adore these Ancient Carpathian Monks! Isai, and Julija have a bumpy start to their bonding, and the eventual claiming of each other as lifemates. But, Isai adjustments to the modern world is pretty smooth, considering he thinks he wants a woman that clings to his every word. Silly male! What he receives is a lifemate that's just as honorable, protective, and loyal as he is. Julija is such a wonderful strong character. She's honorable to the degree, that she reminds me of the Carpathian male. Honorable, loyal, and a protector of all! Julija had such a terrible upbringing, raised among people that are monsters, but was able to retain her sanity, fight for good, and not succumb to despair, and the pressure of evil. Xavier, Xaviero, and Xavion are still impacting the lives of the Carpathian people even though two (2) of the triplets are dead. We find out what happens to Xavier's dark book, and receive more information on how long Xavier's plan in destroying the other species has been in progress. We see the Shadow Cats, and learn even more about them, and how the evil mages have used them over the years. We're introduced to a new villain. I can't wait to see more of him in future books. He's deliciously evil. We also get an update on Elizabeta, and how she's healing mentally. It'll be interesting to see how Ferro will handle his mate, and the abuse she's been subject to.

4.25 stars--DARK ILLUSION is the twenty-ninth instalment in Christine Feehan’s CARPATHIAN / DARK erotic, paranormal, romance series. This is ancient Carpathian Isai Florea, and mage Julija Brennan’s story line. DARK ILLUSION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. SOME BACKGROUND: All Carpathian males must find their lifemates before they turn vampire or greet the dawn. Without a lifemate, the males no longer see in color, feel pain or experience emotions. A lifemate is the light to their dark. She is the keeper of his heart and the keeper of his soul. As the unmated Carpathian male ages, the darkness begins to envelope his soul. Told from dual third person perspectives (Julija and Isai) DARK ILLUSION continues to focus on a group of ancient Carpathians, nearing the end of their search for a lifemate who have isolated themselves away from the world in a monastery high in the Carpathian mountains. As his search for his younger brother Iulian takes him to the Sierra Mountains, Isai comes across a woman he discovers to be his fated lifemate. On the run from her family and her past, Julija Brennan believes herself to be an enemy of the Carpathian people due to her family’s attempts to destroy them all. What ensues is the building relationship between Julija and Isai, and the potential fall-out as our couple come under fire from some very powerful mages. Julija Brennan doesn’t believe she is worthy to be a Carpathian mate, and immediately refuses Isai attempts to claim her as his own. Having struggled through the abuse and captivity of her earlier life, Julija battles between head and heart when Isai is willing to walk away without a fight. Isai Florea knew immediately Julija Brennan was his lifemate but her stubbornness amounted to silence in an effort to protect the man with whom she would fall in love. As Julija and Isai search for Isai’s missing brother, our couple find themselves the target of Julija’s past, and the family that is determined to imprison her, once again. The relationship between Julija and Isai is one of immediate attraction but our heroine believes she is an enemy of the Carpathian people. Unable to resist the pull between one another, Julija and Isai will complete the bonding but to both their surprise Julija is so much more than a powerful mage. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. DARK ILLUSION is a revealing story line, one that begins to reveal the history and back story of one of the Carpathian’s most hated enemies, an enemy who was and is determined to take down a race of people using any means necessary. Christine Feehan has pulled from one of her more successful story line arcs where the Carpathian people had to fight and discover the truth, in order to survive. The premise is engaging, entertaining and edgy; the romance is steamy and seductive; the characters are strong and determined but there is limited interaction with any of the previous story line characters.

Another wonderful read by Christine Feehan. This book contains so much its difficult to summarize in a review without feeling you’re leaving too much out. You really need to experience this one in its entirety, submerge yourself in it! The definition of Illusion is prevalent in many ways throughout the story. The magical use of power to make a thing wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses. And information that gives a deceptive appearance or impression about a person or event, a false idea or belief based on information you have about others. The hunt for Xavier’s book is on! The book was somehow taken from the safe keeping of the Prince. I love the way it happened and no one suspected the truth. It leads to misconceptions and twists that make this book even more intriguing. The journey Isai and Julija have to take to discover each other’s intentions is not the typical lifemate claiming. They move from separate untrusting journeys to one solid union to fight for their survival and the survival of the Carpathians. With amazing twists! For them to reach that place they need to unravel their misconceptions, self perceptions, judgments of themselves and each other. To do this they need to be open, trusting enough to share their journey, their pasts. Both are heart-touching and heartbreaking. Isai quickly realized he was wrong about his perception of her deceit and treachery. Understanding dawns as he comes to know her. Sees her reaction to events as they search for the book.  Julija has a bit more difficult time trusting, her life had bombarded her with so much deceit, misconceptions of herself and others, she doesn’t know what is real, what to trust. She becomes open to him and their relationship through the support and knowledge she gets from her friendship, her bond with Elizabeta. Love the way this is shared in the book. Love how her self sacrifice for Elizabeta and the Carpathians is revealed, even with all it may cost her. She becomes one of my favorite heroines in the Series. Her courage and trust in him builds a strong bond that gives her hope and faith in herself, in him, and them as a couple and at last hope for victory. As they share their histories, Isai begins to melt my heart. His stoic strength, facing those who had and would harm his woman, his encouragement to help Julija understand, come into her own abilities and admire her confidence in herself is so beautifully written. They use her knowledge and the knowledge he has learned from other Carpathians to fight the evil mages, form unique alliances. (Always trust someone who is kind to animals.) past events from previous books are wonderfully revisited as they decide how to proceed.  The love story that develops between them touches the heart. Forgiveness and acceptance, and the willingness to sacrifice everything for each other. they join together to overcome her family , discover the truth about his brother, and destroy Xavier’s book. All with action, and amazing Mage against Carpathian battles. Passion and romantic touching moments, and of course touches of humor. In the end one powerful mage remains as a danger to Julija and the Carpathians, adding even more danger beyond the Vampire threat.

This one surprised me a bit. I like surprises. Life mates are drawn towards each other, as noted in the synopsis, if this is a first read for you. I like that they are evolving, even if these warriors are the oldest ones! Feeling that perhaps his life mate was untrustworthy, or devoid of integrity this warrior was willing to fight the bond, that through me for a loop. Made me love him all the more, and hurt for him. Julija, Mage and Carpathian, past contributes to the misunderstanding. What I absolutely loved was the shadow cats and how past stories played a part in the shadow cats. As Julija and Isai fight the evil that chases them on their appointed endeavor they learn to trust each other, and themselves. ** Possible Triggers:some of Julija past is a tad difficult to read, but its told as a past occurrence, same with animal abuse.** Thank you for the arc, Berkley and Christine Feehan. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given freely.

Dark Illusion by Christine Feehan Dark Series Book #33 Release Date: 09/03/2019 Review by SKO Julija Brennan is a mistress of illusion the best within her family and yet her two brothers want her dead. She chose to separate herself from her family, leave them and go to warn the Prince of Carpathian people Mikhail Dubrinksy of the conspiracy against him and his people. Xavier, the high mage created a book of evil spells to bring on death and destruction to the Carpathians. Julija is determent to find the book and destroy it but plans did not include running into Isai Florea, her lifemate. Isai Florea spent centuries in a monastery high in the Carpathian Mountains. His honor as a warrior, and the hope of finding his lifemate kept him going. The activities of a busy city, lights, traffic noise, and the people, all made him very uncomfortable. However, centuries of discipline helped him focus on his assignment of finding his brother Iulian Florea and Xavier’s evil and deadly book of spells. What Isai Florea did not expect was to find his lifemate Julija Brennan. Even though Julija is not too thrilled to learn Isai is her lifemate she reluctantly accepts his help to accomplish what she set out to do. However, Isai was not willing to lose her. Dark Illusion is book 33 in the Dark Series, also known as the Carpathian Novels. Each book is a standalone read; however it helps if you know the history of Carpathian people. I was totally captivated from the first to the last page and could not put the book down until I finished it. Just when I thought Xavier would be gone forever he is still causing havoc. As Julija and Isai search for the book their bond grows stronger and as their bond grows so does their love for each other. Isai helps Julija search her past memories to understand the present and the true meaning of the lifemate bond. Will the evil legacy Xavier left behind continue to torment the Carpathians or will the ancient Carpathian and mistress of illusion outwit the evil ones and destroy Xavier’s evil book once and for all? As always Christine Feehan storyteller extraordinaire gives us more then we bargained for. The book is action packed, sweet romance and more information that may just require a second and a third reading. Want to live longer? Read a book, and as always until next time happy reading!

What’s a girl to do when she doesn’t want a lifemate? Don’t talk. At least that is Julija Brennan’s solution. Julija is a mage and was raised to consider the Carpathian people as enemies. Now she finds herself in the Sierra Mountains and in a race to prevent something terrible from happening. Isai Florea has been sent in search of his brother who is suspected of stealing something from the Prince of the Carpathian people. Something that could destroy the entire Carpathian race if it falls into the wrong hands. Two people on different missions that eventually become one. Having been raised to view Carpathians as enemies, Julija faces a difficult decision when Isai tries to claim his lifemate. Of course, she makes the wrong decision and refuses to talk. When she finally does speak to Isai it’s only to deny the bond. This was heartbreaking for me to watch. Then it becomes enjoyable when Julija changes her mind and wants Isai to claim her. Isai does make her work to earn the claiming and I enjoyed this very much. We also get quite the information dump on past happenings between the mages and the other races. We also experience what happens when a Carpathian male finds his lifemate too late. Make sure you have a box of Kleenex nearby when reading Dark Illusion. If you thought other books in the series had rocky roads, you ain’t seen nothing yet until you read this one. This is Christine Feehan at her best!

Love. Hope. Redemption. Trust. Dark Illusion by Christine Feehan gives you these and so much more! Once I started reading, I couldn't stop! Mrs. Feehan is one of my favorite Authors. When she releases a new book, I need to bask in the awesomeness created. The romance between Julija and Isai is sizzling hot from the very start, but there is an underlying current of mistrust. When they are brought together for the common goal of getting, and destroying, the book of evil spells that could end all Carpathians. But evil is chasing them, and they must work side-by-side to fight the evil that chases them on their appointed endeavor. They learn to trust each other, and themselves. The beginning of the story was angsty, but as I read, I understood the reasoning. The book is fast-paced and will keep the reader needing to turn the pages to find out what would happen. Dark Illusion - the reader can consume it as a stand-alone! 5 BIG BRIGHT BEAUTIFUL STARS!

Dark Illusion by Christine Feehan is the 29th book in her wonderful Carpathian series. I am happy to say I really ended up loving this story, but at the very beginning I was a bit turned off by the abusive behavior of the Carpathian man; worried that we were going back to that again. But thankfully, that was just the beginning, and everything was great from there on in. Julija Brennan, our heroine, is a mage and Carpathian. We met her in a previous book (Dark Legacy), where she tried to warn the Carpathians about the threat, but ran away to help find the book of evil spells that could destroy all Carpathians. Julija knows how dangerous the book is, as well as how powerful her father and brothers are (they are products of the evil Xavier) and their determination to find her, get the book and kill her. She has the ability to sense the Carpathian man who has the book and is attempting to hide it; using her mage sense she keeps tracking him, knowing her family will attempt to kill the man. Before she could go too much further, she is accosted by a powerful Carpathian warrior who thought she betrayed the Carpathians. Isai Florea, our hero, and the Carpathian sent to track down Julija, is shocked to discover that she is his lifemate. Isai is an ancient from the monastery, struggling with his lack of emotions or color, and treats Julija abusively at first, since he felt she belongs to him, and she must obey him. Fortunately, Julija is powerful in her own right, and in time, she will teach him how women need to be treated equally. Julija has suffered her whole life, as her family brutalized her often. Isai began to change quickly, as his love for Julija grew, and his admiration how powerful she was becoming, being both a mage and Carpathian. Together their goal was to get the book and destroy it, but they knew they were being followed by Julija’s family. What I loved the most about this book, was not the wonderful romance that was sweet and steamy, but how they both fell hard for the Shadow cats (panthers) that the mages beat and forced them to hurt people. I loved how Julija and Isai helped treat them, and remove the spells on them. Blue and Belle were the first two, and their loyalty to Julija and Isai was wonderful, and eventually 4 more would eventually join them. I loved how they would become part of them, much like Ivory and her wolves. What follows is an exciting, intense story line where both Isai and Julija and the cats have to be one step ahead of her family, and another powerful mage, Barnabas, who are set to destroy them. Along the way, they must find the book and destroy it. Dark Illusion was a pulse-pounding, edge of your seat thriller, that kept me unable to put the book down; as well as having a wonderful couple to root hard for. Dark Illusion though tying most ends, did end a bit abruptly, especially with the powerful Barnabas still around. We know the Malinovs are still around, but now the Mages are too. So much more to come. If you read this series, do not miss Dark Illusion

Fated mates are a favorite of mine. I've read several of the books from this series and always enjoy them. This one has the Mage and Carpathian together and it's a perfect fit. I haven't read every book in this series but it doesn't matter. This author does an amazing job of helping you understand anything you may have missed along the way. But it's the world of the Carpathian's that really captures my heart. I love the Carpathian's. It's a great world that has so many possible stories. I love it. This couple is perfection. Julija and Isai each bring impressive strengths to the table but together they are unstoppable. I love how positive and supportive Isai is with Julija. She has been through some serious struggles through her life but he is such a strength to her. What I really love about this series is how the fact the couple will work is never in question. A little resistance but nothing that monopolizes the book. No, this is about a couple working together to overcome some really incredible odds. I love that. They are stronger and better together. Isai is an ancient who has waiting a very long time for his life mate. I love that he has a message for his life mate tattooed on his back. His willingness to wait for her and the strength he gathers from her to do that waiting is amazing. It developed his patience that he shows so much with Julija. He's sexy and strong. He's there for her. I fell hard for him. Julija had me wondering about her at first. I didn't quite get her for quite some time. It was later in the story when parts of her became clear that I finally understood her. There is just a tiny bit of disconnect between who she seems to be and who she really is as the book unfolds. Not as confident as she first appears, Julija has been through some terrible things. She pushes Isai away at first but he becomes her strength. The story moves quickly and develops this couples relationship perfectly. I enjoyed how nothing is easy for them but they were there for each other. All the evil comes out against them. In the end, it is no match for them. The second half of the book was my favorite. I loved seeing some of the evil get their behinds kicked. I, also, loved how the cats became such an important part of the story. I love Blue. The cats added so much caring to this story. If you haven't read this series yet, you should. Great paranormal romance.

I enjoyed this book as I do all her works. Having said that, there were parts that skipped and I had to go back and reread paragraphs. I love the carpathian claiming words that are imprinted in the males even before birth they should be recited with feeling and shouldn't be interrupted with thoughts and other feelings until they are complete. I feel like something was missing with his vows. I loved the story line and how they dealt with the shadow cats and how they destroyed the book. And how she overcame her fear of the dark magi's. The author did skip around in a few places that left me confused and I had to backtrack and still felt like thoughts and meanings were just left out. I would recommend this book.

This book got me from the very beginning! And I had to keep reading until it was done. You get drawn into it so easily and stay there until you finish the book. Julija has suffered from abuse by her family her whole life. She is mage and Carpathian. She knows she is a mate for someone but does not feel that she is worthy of being a life mate. She is currently following the trail of a Carpathian male who has taken a very evil book and she needs to find the book and destroy it. That is her goal and she needs to get it done right away. Isai is following the trail of his brother and finds Julija. He is not sure if she is in league with his brother or not. He restrains her and starts seeing colors again for the first time in centuries. He realizes that she is his life mate. When she refuses to speak to him, he calls her selfish for trying to deny him the right to have a life mate. This immediately sets the pair at odds with each other The sparks just fly between the two of them as they search for the book and fight off Julija’s family who want her back with them. There is a wild side to them and then there are precious learning times, and they learn what each other have been through during their lifetimes, making them who and what they are. And we also learn a bit more about Elisabeta, who was kidnapped as a young lady and held prisoner by a vampire for many years. Can she overcome her past to be a life mate? Christine Feehan continues to keep us on our toes and wanting more of her books. I for one cannot wait for the next book in the dark series! #DarkIllusion, #ChristineFeehan
